Have been working on this over the weekend. Tried to go for that Todd Terje kind of sound - guess it’s nu-disco / deep house / indie dance or something .. would appreciate any pointers as to the genre.
Comments on the track are appreciated as it might need a few tweaks, keen to hear your thoughts.
I should have been clearer: I’ve been really digging a couple of Todd Terje tracks lately and it inspired me to check out using a sequence / almost appegiated synth for the bass part. I’m pretty pleased with the result of my experimentation.
Because I created it and I use different elements and have different influences - it is a different result. A funlife result, not a Todd Terje result.
I made a few changes to the track. Took out the intro bass and vocal line, simplified it - I think it makes it more effective.
Thanks for the support guys, glad you’re enjoying it.
Nephew is right, finding a personal sound is the bottom line. Though I don’t see any problem in drawing inspiration from other artists in finding that sound.
In terms of the project I feel it’s close to complete. That is, I’m not sure of what changes to make at the moment. As it came together really quickly I probably need some time away to hear possible changes / parts that need tweaking
Nice one man. I listen to a lot of this kind of stuff so maybe my input will be of some value to you.
It’s a nifty little italo tune, and that rising/dropping pitch bit at the peak is well done.
But it follows the playbook to the letter. There is nothing wrong with that at all, because there is a lot to learn from imitating things you like, however at the present time this blends in and disappears among thousands of mid-energy disco tunes very similar to it.
One of the things that makes guys like Todd Terje so listenable is how his instrumental layering is very controlled. Things are brought in and taken out in calculated portions, and there’s never a time you hear every instrument all at once. These days, disco requires a lot more subtlety and restraint than it used to.
All things considered, it’s a pretty neat little study and I hope that you find your inner Funlife in the near future. Keep up the boogie, sire.
I agree it does follow the playbook, it’s a rather simple tune. I think maybe to make it more interesting it requires another layer or some synth fills - something like that. Though I am conscious of over-doing it, I would like to achieve effectiveness through simplicity. But it probably needs a part or two (or the existing parts) to come in and out a bit.
So yep some work on the arrangement.
Also in regards to the mixdown - I agree, needs more time spent on it. It was a quickish render and while I’m overall pretty happy with the levels, I can hear some tweaks.
I’m not too sure how the subbass is sitting, I haven’t had a chance to listen to it in a studio or even pseudo-studio environment. And I don’t have much experience with subbass as I only recently started using one (in the search for a more complete sound).
Once I have a look at the arrangement and if I’m feeling it has potential I’ll probably look at having it professionally mastered
