Genres of music at 120 bpm

Hey everyone,

It seems that alot of people around here really like 120 bpms. I’m new to this genre stuff so I was wondering if theres a specfic genre that defines music at 120 bpms. Scattered tune is all I can find. Can yeah turn on a few lights for me or what?

techno, tech-house, and minimal are the most likely canidate. mostly in the mid-120s though (124-128)

and house, older house music and deep are in the 115-125ish range

deadly quick responses !

I’ll check into these genres, thanks for the help!

i find quite a bit of nu-disco in the 120 range too too…mainly 110 - 120.

when i was 20 i used to think 120 was soooo slow and never went below 125. now i’m 28 i think very differently

You get quite a lot of broken beat and funky breaks around this speed too. And nu-disco.

deadmau5 is always at 128

trololololololololol

i like how joel himself made that, and it might become be the most used picture on this forum

be sides that one chick whose name i forgot cue the picture

with b3nzon8 on this forum. i highly doubt it will become the most used picture on this forum

im just waiting for him to post a picture of deadmau5 having a love affair with a dolphin inside a roadside texas bbq shack while senior citizens dance in the background in front of a flaming unicorn licking a chihuahua dressed as a fire fighter.

that can be arranged.

The mind boggles…

Some labels -
Defected, Kompakt, Get Physical, Parquet, Great Stuff, Poker Flat

Some other labels
Cocoon, 100% Pure, Hotfingers/303 Lovers, Spinnin Records, Systematic Recordings, Viva Music, Toolroom, Saved, Rejected, Noir Music, Formatik, Drumcode.

Nice list padi_04 - forgot about Cocoon & Systematic - ace!

Most DAWs default project BPM is set at 120… most of the popular sound libraries (loops) are also at 120bpm, so it’s not a surprise to see that House, Techno, and others are the same.

I tend to stay around 120bpm (deep house)…somehow my creativity hovers around that speed, so it’s just convenient that my DAW defaults to it when I start a new project.

Soulful House, Funk, Afrobeat…

In the meantime…some of my favorites

…Peace…

For each of the genres below, I used my collection to compute the fraction of the music within that genre which is within 2% of 120 BPM (i.e., has a tempo between 117.6 - 122.4 BPM).

So, for example, I have 105 Deep House tracks with tempo within 2% of 120 BPM. My collection contains a total of 299 Deep House tracks, so the percentage for deep house is 105/299 = 35%

Acid: 9%

Deep House: 35%

Disco: 25%

Electro: 18%

House: 24%

Indie Dance/Nu Disco: 31%

Leftfield: 15%

Minimal: 13%

Synth-pop: 16% (small sample, it’s 7 out of 45)

Tech House: 15%

Techno: 11%

I have some other genres (e.g., Downtempo, DnB) which I didn’t even list since these obviously hardly ever use a tempo ~120 BPM.
