Getting paid to leave early! :(

Getting paid to leave early! :disappointed:

Tonight this happened!

Quite frankly we were commissioned to play a drum and bass mix (as seen in our signature), people weren’t enjoying it because the sound system was not up to par (they had no subwoofers - no joke) and the manager kindly asked us to leave early as people weren’t enjoying the music . . . :disappointed:

The crowd were young (16-18) and NONE of them recognised the infamous ‘smack my bitch up’! So we moved onto more ‘mainstream’ drum and bass by Chase and Status and Nero for example and none of them enjoyed it! There is only so much you can do if you are commisioned to play a drum and bass set (literally played every sub genre - liquid, jump up, neurofunk) and no one enjoyed it! :disappointed: . . .

We kept trying everything we could do but nout happened and eventually we were asked to leave. But 2 weeks ago we played this exact mix at a night supporting the Scratch Perverts (on a Friday night) and we had so many compliments on a different night and a different club!!

What would you do in this situation??

Just roll with the punches. You win some, you lose some.

I quote mine and the managers discussion:

Manager “Sorry your music is TOO loud”
Me “Our music isn’t too loud, your soundsystem is TOO quiet!” :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh well we refuse to ever play at that club again, unless it changes ownership and has a major rehaul! Not really to fussed as we were guest DJ’s and we are residents at another club in Hereford.

Hereford? You play drum and bass in Hereford? I thought Hereford was full of retirees and cows!?!? No wonder they didn’t like it!

Hey :stuck_out_tongue:

We have on decent club (the Jailhouse) where they have booked chase and status, pendulum, dj fresh, netsky, high rankin, spor, Darren styles etc and we are booked to support breakage in June

So we aren’t so old but tonight we were asked to play in one of the more mainstream clubs in Hereford!

if youre free to switch genres then do that. anyways i dont get who books bass music to be played on half a soundsystem to a crowd that doesnt like it.

in some scenarios theres not much you can do i think.

btw, drop a link to one of your mixes. download preferred!

Never talk shit about another club/promoter/night/owner…we are all in this together…

You didnt…just telling the other peeps…

yeah dood. i bet you guys coulda switched it up and played a more elcectic mid.

i mean you still got paid didnt you? it would be a different story if the guy was like… “hey people dont liek this… sorry get out… yeah no money for you”

that would be bullshit

i would practice if i were you

You weren’t allowed to try another genre like some house dance music or something? But yeah if your trying to let the crowd dance with dnb Gold dust - Dj fresh will always get you on the move! Gets me pumping even when i’m tired

Bummer mate. But, its part of the game.

If you don’t fit and can’t, or want, to play another genre, Just leave the place, and take that on the chin like a man. There’s a load of other places, Life’s too short to bother with such small issues.

It’s always good to have a whole palette of music genre though.

Great story. Great song. Who doesnt recognize that song.

There was nothing wrong with the mixing, as you can hear in our mixcloud it was just the crowd had such a negative vibe against drum and bass . . .

As said we read the crowds response adapted the music choice from neurofunk to more mainsteam jump up and liquid drum and bass and nothing! They didn’t even move to gold dust (vocal remix), so we put on this at the end to try and have a last attempt and still nothing . . :disappointed:

We would have switched genre to electro house but I think that could have been worse as the promoter said the main complaint was “They didn’t know the music so they refused to dance to it”??

We were playing to a very mainstream music crowd who were insisting on dancing to music they knew. Rather than listening to new music and enjoying it. As our ethos is to try and bring some new music that people wouldn’t have heard of before and have them leaving thinking what was that song?

Surely it was the promoters fault for hiring drum and bass DJ’s for a mainstream club night playing to a top40 crowd?

Yeah id say thats pritty short-sighted. Especially if the night wasnt even advertised as a DnB night, and everywhere was just ‘Business as Usual’ but with errr different music??? wtf?? I can see the patrons faces.

Youre actually really close to me btw, I live over in worcester!

Ah kool

Yeah exactly what I thought we did all we could and our electro house collection isn’t the most mainstream so I don’t think it would have done any good "/

You DJ’ing in any clubs there?

This is a growing problem, more and more people claim to love everything yet only listen to whats funnelled to them by radio, in an age where we can roam youtube and listen to anything people seem
to be happy to be spoon fed music and cant deal with anything out of the norm.

Even doing commercial gigs, if you play a song off a new album by a chart artist,
before its been released as a single, chances are you’ll get the “what’s this sh!t, play something good” once its been on radio two times they’ll harass you for the exact same track. They’re like drones.

Sorry to hear about the gig getting cut short but dont give up, try to find your audience, and use them to give you a core following at any venue.

On a side note, even if you feel a system is under powered for a venue, never run it into the red, its just not cool and sounds terrible.

Not at the moment.

Ive been trying to get into it but i guess i dont want to come across the problem that started this thread. I love to play Progressive/tech house and at times some hard electro.

But everywhere in worcester is top40/top40/top40. Sin, Bushwackers, Tramps, Velvet etc etc.

I duno if Hereford is more diverse? I think i need to go further afield.

We never do! Makes the music sound too harsh, but the club we were at was running with no subs and pretty small amplifier . .

As said we aren’t too fussed as we have regular bookings at another club in the local area supporting their headliners

I think its a great shame that young people don’t come to clubs anymore looking to listen to new music! :disappointed:

You could always try the Jailhouse, brings really good music into the local area and has a decent sound system (The Wombats voted it in their top 3 they have played on).

check out their site (http://thejailhouse.wordpress.com/)

The manager has already sorted out the line up for the next 2 months but I can PM you when he is looking for more DJ’s to play?
