Gibson Buys Out Stanton
Could be interesting…
and they bought krk too
hopefully they will take some pride in their gear again.. and get away from their futuristic look they have been pushing for so long, for dj equipment there is nothing better than a pain box that has it’s focus on function.
Could be the thing that finally either saves or sinks Stanton. They’ve released some innovative products over the last few years but all of these seem to fall a bit short of their goal of becoming a top player in the industry again due to things like pricepoint or bad industrial design. I picked up an SCS3 system as a whim on clearance (b/c spending $500 for a dj controller w no audio interface is just plain dumb) hoping it’d be a cool addition to my setup & it turned out to be a total dog, fraught with problems. The SCS.1d also seems to be a great idea but at $700 just isnt worth trying. And the Uberstand, while popular due to it’s price & folding design just has a glaring issue with the necessity of a damn ziptie to keep the thing from dumping your laptop onto the floor in front of the DJ booth!
If Gibson can turn the company around, I’d be far more inclined to spend my money on Stanton product again.
maybe they will put some effort into the scs 1 hardware. as its awsome hardware rubbish software intergration
I wonder if stanton will start making usable products instead of cheap gimmicky toys and start to turn around like numark has.
bing.
I mean…the Gibson line is still decent…overpriced, but decent. It’s not like Fender where there are 3 other companies making the same thing but better in every way and at better price points. Gibson seems to have a clue what they’re doing.
Maybe they’ll abandon that stupid all-in-one console and make the spinning platter media player that I’m sure we all want.
I didn’t know they owned Cerwin Vega!! Wonder if they are going to continue making the ST 150…
That’s the only high quality product they make right now so I hope so
I wouldn’t be surprised if they drop down to only making one turntable, and it’d probably be in the $300 range (new).
That would be nice if it’s any good, hopefully it wouldn’t made of all plastic like the t.92s…
Gonna be watching this. I play guitar as well, and LOVE what gibson puts out. Who knows, they may do the same thing they do with guitars. Gibsons are the top of the pile, and Epiphone is the lower end (but still awesome) brother. A high end professional turntable, and an entry level that has less bells and whistles.
Could be interesting if Gibson plans to re-brand Stanton products in any way. A Gibson turntable could be pretty badass; not as sure about controllers. Something about the rock n roll attitude implied by the guitar brand name could really boost sales (though it would be a shame if that happened at the expense of working on quality products).
The SCS line is actually an incredible suite of products; you wouldn’t write them off as cheap plastic toys if you actually use them for a while. The problem as someone said is the software integration; it’s been clumsy for all those products, and with the turntable controller you have this great controller and platter that is crippled with Traktor. And the SCS3’s are nice and fun to use, though I would want it at best as an add-on controller; having the full rig all touchstrips doesn’t do it for me. As it is though that DaRouter interface is clunky at best; I mean it works fine but it adds an extra layer of complexity to everything that you want to do with it.
There’s a lot of interesting ideas in all these controllers that could be pushed into a new, more interesting direction – a solid controller that intelligently incorporates touchstrips is not really quite there yet; I mean, sure, there’s the Numark and Pioneer and of course the Twitch but these all seem to be sort of “hey, I’m not sure what to do with this strip, let’s try this!” approach. Meanwhile SCS3 users have been trying out some very interesting things on controllers that have nothing but touchstrips – surely some of that know-how can lead to the perfect integration of strips and real controls in some kind of new performance controller.
Not that I’d buy it, heh. I already have more than enough gear.
KRK has been under the Stanton group for about 5 years already.
1000% agreed. Same for the other brands involved. There isn’t really much they need to do for KRK, however, with Cerwin Vega if they enforce stricter quality control from their Chinese manufacturer on their woofers, or go back to manufacturing in Mexico or using the original Italian woofer they would be golden (in my book).
Only hope is that they don’t take the Numark Route with Stanton. As a big fan of Numark some of their toys do disappoint me.
