headphones: sennheiser hd 280 vs. pioneer hdj 500 for DJING

Hey guys im in the market for a new pair of headphones, looking to see if i can get it locally if possible (hate paying shipping) and i’m stuck between the sennheiser hd 280s and the pioneer hdj500s. I love the look of the hdj 500s but the pictures make the phones seem like they’re an on ear (pressing against the ear) instead of over the ear headphone, wondering if someone can clarify this! Also the sennheisers I have read have weak bass response and seem to be more of a studio headphone, wondering if they would be adequate for djing at gigs? If you’ve had either pair please share your experience, both seem to have great reviews all over but I would prefer an over the ear to an on ear (pushing against the ear) headphone !

Ive always been partial to Ultrasones personally.

the 280 pro’s are more suited for studio work, hence the flatter bass response. go for the 500’s for dj’ing.

I prefer the HD280s due to their sound, isolation, comfort and robustness but it’s worth mentioning that they are big headphones. They certainly are not that suited to the one ear on one ear off thing.

thanks for the comments any notes on the hdj’s covering the ears completely or just pushing onto the ears?

or what about the sennheiser hd215? Sennheiser DJ Style Headphones | Long & McQuade

or the shure srh440 Shure SRH440 - Closed-Back Pro Studio Headphones | Long & McQuade

HD215 are ok, but don’t have much bass at all.

so cut them? what about the others do you have any thoughts ?

so for djing they’re likely out?

Any over-the-ear headphones will be a little bulky for the one-ear-on/off method

we have some hd-215’S, and they crank

I have the HD 25s - not known to be particularly bass heavy - and the 215s. I hear much more bass (wider range as well as volume) coming from my 25s.

so i take it the hdj 500’s would be my best choice??

Well they are on-ear headphones which you said you didn’t want?

It’s about preference. Go to a store and try them on.

well do they have much isolation or no?

If you want isolation you’re not going to beat the HD280s.

I love my HDJ-500’s. Yes they are “on ear” headphones, but they isolate pretty well and sound really good to boot. The mids aren’t muddy, the highs are clear and pretty crisp and the lows are heavy but separate. Great pair of phones for $100.

I picked up a pair of hd280s and LOVED isolation but they were a little tight and when i tried one ear on one ear off they kinda fell off and put strain on my left ear by pulling on them because of the oval shaped cans. I also tried out a pair of pioneers, loved the sound as well iso is not as great tho -.- does anyone with hd280s have any advice/ways in which they loosen up at all? I figure i might want to go with hd280s for the sake of my ears 80085
