Help ! External monitor Mac OS X (10.6.8)

So I mooched off an old external monitor off a family member yesterday and now I just hooked it up to my MBP early 2011 running Mac OS X (10.6.8) using a Mini Displayport to DVI adaptor.

It’s supposed to instantly recognize the new hardware but all the external monitor says is no signal.

I also tried searching for new displays in the preferences menu.

Can anybody help me out ?

Try hooking it up from VGA or HDMI to Mini Displayport.

I had the same trouble with my MBP and a DVI connector. Hooked the same thing up via VGA and presto.
(Still need to try HDMI though)

goto system setup>display> and it an option to extend or mirror the screen. I was messing with it 2 days ago, using my iPad as my MBP screen for a project im working on.

I don’t quite follow, how do I do this ?
The cable of the display is DVI to DVI.
Are you suggesting this:
DVI to DVI => DVI to HDMI => HDMI to Mini Displayport

Is this what you mean ?

The MPB doesn’t recognize the screen so I’m not able to select any option regarding the screen such as “mirror” for example.

i would +1 on hooking it up via the vga cable… mine works straight away with no set up

How could there be a big difference between these two, they 're nearly identical.

But I don’t have much options and I’m currently looking for a DVI to HDMI adaptor and follow tekki’s advice.

one more thing, is the monitor set to have the DVI on? i remember that being a problem with one of my VGA/DVI monitors.

I am not sure what you mean by that.

It worked fine with a windows pc a week ago

my monitor had a input button to switch between VGA, DVI and S-Video

Ok, got it.
I don’t think mine has or that it’s in the wrong setting because it was hooked up to that pc with DVI just like with my MBP.

If anyone ever has the same problem:

I traded the DVI adaptor in for a VGA adaptor and, of course, hooked up the monitor with VGA.
It 's working perfectly now.
