Unfortunatley, it’s really badly designed. You only have 1 thunderbolt port and the ethernet adapter doesn’t have a second TB port for daisy chaining…so you’d either have to buy an Apple Thunderbolt display or choose between an external monitor and LAN……which seems stupid.
Or, there’s this, coming out later this year……which is a lot more expensive but also better in every way (assuming it’s not complete crap and that they used the right firewire chipset).

Lots of people like Linux on Airs for some reason. I see having to way to get a wired connection making installing wireless drivers incredibly difficult.
Can’t blame NI and Apple for one’s ignorance. Check the system requirements first.

I was referring to the OP. He shouldn’t blame NI or Apple because he made wrong decision on getting a laptop that doesn’t support his hardware and interface.

Actually, blaming Apple is the best bet here. They claimed that their USB ports were 2.0 compatible. NI couldnt have known any better unless Apple runs stuff by them during R&D (obviously not). Apple shouldnt have jumped the gun on 3.0 seeing as how most of the industry still runs on 2.0 or less. Also, getting rid of FW wasnt the best idea either.

True. But there are easy ways around that. Just download them first and put them on the USB key that you’re booting off to install it in the first place.
I agree with both (especially firewire…I don’t own any USB 3.0 drives and USB 2.0 is too slow to be useful). But they’re kind of going all-in on Thunderbolt and forcing people to actually release Thunderbolt stuff. In the end, I think that’ll be better. But AFAIK, there’s nothing actually on the market right now in terms of video/audio interfaces that use it. The Apollo is “ready”, though the module isn’t shipping yet…same with the Apogee Symphony64 Thunderbridge. And both of those are pretty high end compared to what bedroom producers want.
I think RME makes a USB 3.0 sound card too, but again…fairly high end. MOTU might as well. But there’s nothing like the Audio 2/6/10 unless they work with it. And I read a report that the Audio 2 doesn’t even try.
DJs are the ones getting screwed most in this one.
And it’s still solvable. Sonnet makes a Thunderbolt to Expresscard34 bridge…but then you’re talking a few hundred bucks just to run FW or USB 2.0…and not both (I don’t think)…and they don’t daisy chain, which means you can’t use an external display while you’re using it.
Everything will be fine within a year. But until then, it’ll be a crap shoot.
Whatever…that’ll give me time to consider building a hackintosh desktop. Does anyone know if you can return components to Amazon? (in case I can’t get FW working, etc.)
Exact same thing happened to me, I just bought an air and tried to connect it to my audio 4, no dice (Plugging my usb hub into the 3.0 ports did not change anything). Called NI and they said the 6 and 10 will work but the 2, 4, and 8 are screwed.
Any conformation on the audio 6 working reliably on the new macbooks?

So, that’s $300 to get my DVS working after I upgrade and another $2300 for the only production/recording sound card I can find that specifically mentions USB 3.0. Let me get my pocket change……………

This isn’t a hardware problem, is it? So the companies would have to fix the driver and software issues and the problem will be solved.

I’d imagine a driver update would fix a lot of them. Depending on exactly how things work, I’d imagine that some would just be fucked, which seems to match what NI said about the audio 2/4/8 and what serato seems to have said about the sl1.
It’s one of those times when everything is about to get expensive and people using “legacy” hardware are about to just have to stop upgrading. The same thing happened when apple switched to intel. An before that. And the PCIx to PCIe switch. It’ll happen again and again…that’s just how technology works.
Personally, I’m debating taking the computer completely out of my dj setup just to make that side simpler. Unfortunately, that also makes it more expensive.

Same here. Not intending to take the computer out of my DJ setup but especially reducing its importance in my production. But as we all have noticed: Hardware is damn expensive…
I mean…the thing is that it’s totally doable for a DJ setup. Taking the computer completely out of a production rig is, well, possible……but it’s a huge PITA.
Would I be completely stupid for considering vinyl + SCS.4dj for home and rekordbox-prep’d keys for anywhere else? Or just not practicing. That could work.
