How can I pick up a gig through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

Being 14, the only parties that you will be able to DJ will be that of your friends or your parents friends, people you know. At your age and lack of experience, no one is going to just hire you because you say you are a DJ. I would try to find a local mobile DJ company and ask them if there is anything you could do to help them on gigs. I don’t know what the work laws are in your area so you may or not be able to get a little pay but this will give you experience on handling parties and clients, know what to expect, and give you a little insight abuot how to properly handle DJing for a real client. You are only 14, you have plenty of time to get gigs, at this stage you should learn all you can about the DJ business.

Kids and the entitlement complex. Pick my name, teach me this, get me a gig, this seems to be a common theme around here.

Matt Blaze has some sound advice. I don’t though. I say, go back to your room to practice. When you are good enough for gigs, people will crowd around your window like rats to a flute.

I agree somewhat with your first half / the entitlement bit, but definitely don’t agree with the second half. I think that he should and perhaps needs to perform. It might provide a reality check or at least some readjustment.

Thats kind of what im shooting for. A house party

Your 14, spend the next 4 years learning about and listening to good music before you even think about gigs.

DJUSAUS do you have any mixes on soundcloud or mixcloud that we could listen too

Facebook chat:
Promoter: I saw your posting that you are a DJ, cool, we need someone to fill our club this Friday with 300+ people, are you ready to go?
DJ: Yes, what’s the time and place.
Promoter: 1111 Church Avenue, Oakhurst, start 10pm.
DJ: Okey dokey.

Somehow I think this is utopian. Promoters don’t pick up someone from a social site just because they claim they are DJs. I.e. you need a body of work, connections and proof that you do a good job. Start with body of work and connections. The rest will come from that.

Get experience. Learn your gear, learn the music… Dj’ing is an art. Let’s see a mix of yours?

you forgot…

Promotor: and we will pay you $1000 for the night

Ahhhh the halycon days of school Summer holidays… seems a long time ago now…

OP: own party = it’s obligatory to DJ at that surely?!! You can rock out your EDM to your hearts content then and looks uber cool too!!!

Yes I have one. I couldn’t post the other due to Soundclouds copyright purposes

Use Mixcloud or Mixcrate instead.

It could be better. But the real question is can you do recreate that or do something similiar live with a couple of hundre people in front of you while being under serious pressure

You can start by staying in school and finishing at least highschool

Cheers OP, do you have something longer, which would represent more of a DJ set (30 mins+)? The link is a mashup and doesn’t really give the listener an idea of your DJing style or how you would play at a gig.

I have bin working on a small little Dubstep mix. But nothing like 30 mins long yet.

Yeah

what´s the reason that hinders you from making a mixtape? i mean, you won´t get any gigs without showing what you are capable of.
noone´s gonna book you without knowing what´s behind the name. the best would be to fully concentrate on mixing and making mixtapes. only when you´re feeling secure and stable with your abilities is the time to worry about getting gigs.

Yeah I get that. But all the kids that throw the partys usually just have their iPod hooked up to some speakers. This one kid was a Dj at this party and he only had a laptop and he just played the music loud out of some huge speakers and he got paid 150 dollars. If kids see that I actually have some form of DJ equipment then I know they would let me play. I know that what it sounds like im saying is that there going to let me in just because i have a S2. But what im saying is they would know I take it seriously enough to actually buy a mixer, get a macbook and show up.

i totally know where you are coming from. but let me tell you one thing (or two  ):
gear doesn´t make a good dj, i started playing out with a random qwerty-keyboard. i got into the club scene and still was rocking it. and nobody was complaining, cause they had fun. hell, if i´d stood there with only an ipod, they´d still party their asses off. it comes down to know what´s good is for a crowd. don´t worry about gear, MONEY etc. this will all come day by day.
priority #1 is getting to know your tracks. improving your mixing and so on.
and last but not least: please please please don´t do it for the fame. do it for the love of music. craving for things like money and fame will only lead you to the dark side and we all know what happens, once you´re there
