It seems that the 2 DJ set is a great way to promote you to land gigs (i.e. Bloody Beetroots, MSTRKRFT, Crookers, Justice, ect). But how do the 2 DJ work at the same time? Is it just that one can take a break while the other spins? Do each get 2 decks and work with the same mixer? What?
depends on the act i guess, maybe one is better at track selection and the other is better at actual mixing. Maybe they take turns doing a few transitions at a time while the other plans where to go from here. Also they could have one person independently doing effects while the other mixes, then swaping over.
Some Trance Duo’s i’m into consist of a producer and a dj.
Only one of them tours for the actual performances while the other is sitting at home producing.
e.g. Aly & Fila (Fila tours and performs)
Agnelli & Nelson (Robbie Nelson tours and performs)
I think that might be a smart move, having different members of the duo tour to maximize exposure. I am considering creating a duo when I go back to campus in the fall.
tons of different ways! What me and buddies do is just run whoever’s (usually mine I am all midi no analog except Audio(lul) ) mix out to an empty channel on their mixer then I cue up my loop an hop between both stations and do my shit, full fade then hop back to mine SUPER FUN, gets EVERYONE riled up when you throw some body language into it. Also EXTREMELY fun when you know how to work together and make random badass mashups that YOU FORGET TO FRIKKIN RECORD!
We pretty much just take turns mixing. Then the one with free time can tweak effects, and get the crowd hyped up and into it. When i’m not mixing, i’m usually jumping around like some kind of mad man, yelling at the top of my lungs and hitting my self in the chest like a guerrilla.
Yep, when you are alone, sometimes you want to do so many things and you end up not having even time to look to your audience and play with them.
As a regular Open Air Raver and/or Cluber I can say that I love when the DJ seems really enjoying what he’s doing, and when they seems to be calling you (really looking at you) to enjoy his music with him it’s when he get a connection with the audience and we can feel special to be connected with the artist (the DJ).
That’s when the DJ get famous, when he can make that connection happen! From this day on, we will always talk about the DJ who made us feel special and the best marketing tool is made “mouth by mouth”
Man I’ve gone deep know, it’s better to get back to work
I imagine, trance-y techno-y and house-y sounds use multiple decks and effects so 2 DJs have still a lot to do.
On the other hand i watched very closely what DnB duo’s do with their performance.
namely Camo & Krooked and the Brookes Brothers
both of those duos had 3 deck CDJ setup with one mixer. Both of them had Headphones and cueing signal was split between them. Their set was usualy play banger, lay another banger on top of that, and then transition into some other song’s massive intro and then drop another choon after breakdown, and so on. Logistics of their moves was also interesting> One of them was a head dj and the other one was loading tracks into decks and beat/phase/matched them. So the head DJ had plenty of time to concentrate on the crowd and EQ (as they played mutliple choons at the same time, proper EQ is critical), then the other DJ started layering third song into the mix as a transition, then u had 2dj operating one mix (the guys were really in sync), after that, they changed positions, rinse and repeat. I saw Flosstradamus perform about 3 weeks ago it was pretty amazing. One of the best duo’s I’ve seen. They used two mixers 4 TT’s. In general, one would mix a couple of tracks, then the other would mix a couple. Throughout the performance the person not mixing was scratching, doing cool effects, making mash ups, looking for the next track, hyping the crowd, or mixing in the next song though. So , both were constantly busy.
I feel like the main reasoning behind it is that the produce as a team, and it would be silly for just one person to do the live performing. Also, two people allows more versatility and more to go on at once. That being said, if you ever saw that picture of Justice from the djtt article about the biggest DJing fails of 2009, the unplugged apc40 is a good example of how it isn’t always practical. Obviously in their case, the other guy (I forgot their names) is the better DJ.
@MonkeyFish : here’s a little inside story from an office at Ed Banger.
Pedro Winter : Hey guys, ze crowd’s complaining zat Gaspard doesn’t, you know, do enough stuff at your gigs. Xavier, you have to let him do stuff.
Gaspard : (happy) Oh yes yes yes! Pleez!(jumps up and down, clapping his hands like an excited schoolgirl)
Xavier : B-but… remember that one time he pushed the wrong record… it f$cked up my sh1t.
Gaspard : (frowns)… well. But zey really liked it when I touched something zat one time.
Pedro (scratches his chin) : hmm… well… I have an idea
