How do I make this simple sound effect

The sound I’m looking for is also found in UK Hard House, NRG, Hardcore what ever you want to call it.

Funny thing is I don’t want to produce these genres I just want this one sound.

I’ve thought about this sound off and on for a couple years now. It’s literally a simple low octave stab but I have yet to recreate it on Reason.

I’ve been told it maybe a distorted 303 sample or something but I haven’t had any luck.

You can hear the specific sound I’m looking for in this track at 0:18 or 1:25 with the shuttering Hoover and through out the whole song.

Let me know if you guys come up with any Ideas. THANKS!

Sounds like the stab sound from Joey Beltrams ‘energy flash’…i might have a sample of it somewhere but i wouldnt know how to make it sorry…

That sound is used in Energy Flash as well as a lot of Acid house, techno, trance…it’s all over.

The original very well may have been a 303, but that’s not the important part.

I got kinda close with 1 oscilator in Maschine (I used the Basic Saw sample…everything else was done with parameters on its sampler, but any subtractive synth could do it).

Single voice, low-pass filter with the cutoff set pretty low (I use around 120Hz playing around D2) with a modulation envelope on the Cutoff and Drive parameters (set to near 100%), attack was lowish but not zero (that was the key), medium decay, 0 sustain, 0 release. To do more than single-note stabs, it’d need to be able to glide between notes, but I’m not sure Maschine can’t do that.

Other than that, I heard a reverb/delay of some kind, but I stopped screwing with it at that point because Maschine’s reverbs really fucking blow and I haven’t spent money on a good one yet.

Easiest way would be to get a 303 or an emulator and modulate the filter and drive/distortion…it might even just be the accent.

I’d buy AudioRealism’s ABL2 if I were in the market because I like the sound of technobox2 for the iPhone, but I’d proabably bitch about it because it’s not available as an RTAS in case I decide to move away from Maschine.

If you’re solidly on Reason, I’m sure someone has made a 303-emulating combinator patch based on subtractor.

I’m glad you guys know the source. I sometimes forget how sample heavy electronic music can be.

@vcantilife
if you wouldn’t mind I would love to take a peak at that sample.

@mostapha
I do have machine, I got through live in order to use vst’s and i’s. I can give your sound a try and maybe tweak it some.

Thanks again!

There are tutorials about turning Analog into a 303 sound. Find one of those.

Seriously, it’s a 1-oscillator monophonic synth with a low pass filter, some cutoff automation, and some kind of distortion.
