Sup DJTT I had an Idea…
you know how SOME CDJ and Vinyl DJ’s say using a laptop isn’t real DJing and there is no skill and you are not a real DJ if you use a Laptop. well I had an idea of making a movie where I video people doing a task on a more evolved piece of equipment. Something like…
You’re not driving you are just a middle aged woman with a GPS,
You are not changing channels you are just a tired guy pressing buttons on a remote,
You are not an author you are just pressing keys on a computer,
You are not a music producer you are just tweaking virtual knobs in ableton or protools,
You are not communicating with your friends you are just a kid with a phone,
You are not listening to music you are just listening to signals from an iPod, You are not an artist you are just a guy with photoshop,
You do not know how to play the keyboard you are just pressing buttons on a midi keyboard,
You are not a pastry chef you just put ingredients in an electric oven.
Would anyone like to see this made?
Heard this a million times with cdj vs. vinyl and it wasnt that long ago.
The problem is there are a lot of new dj’s who get their laptop, a few tunes and software and think they’re ready because the software makes it much easier to be a beginner. This then gives laptop dj’s a really bad reputation.
On the other hand I’ve seen some established “big” names using laptops recently and they have gotten pure lazy and boring with software.
Afterwards I’ve listened to the rants of how shit they were with their laptops and the truth is they were! No argument is gonna say different.
It’s up to each individual to “prove” themselves! There’s nothing else gonna settle it with any haters. You either ignore or prove that you can do something fresh, awesome and different.
Everytime i have heard “laptops are crap for DJing” its been said by a dick-wad that hasnt got a clue about Djing / laptops / Life or anything valid at all.
Its a ridiculous statement made by:
Teenagers who think its only cool to use CDJs.
Old wankers who think its only cool to use vinyl.
No prob! I suppose it might all change when I do start playing out with my laptop! So far I haven’t gone to any gigs with “dick-wads” or “Teenagers/Old wankers” to have to converse with any such people! Lol
I agree that using a laptop doesn’t has nothing to do with being a shit DJ. That being said, all of the above don’t help your case as they are somewhat true 90% of the time.
Anyways, haters gonna hate. I’m old school always will be but i’m moving forward with times. I love watching a good performance from vinyl and a good performance from CDJ’s and even with laptops.
What i can’t stand is LAZY performances from CDJ’s or laptops..
As for the comments from people when you are using a laptop my mate once was running Ableton and a APC40 preparing for a tour with Calvin Harris and somebody commented on it (he was in my/his weekly residency, we know pretty much everybody) so what did he do?
He actually went over to the old DJ box pulled the Techs out the box set them up, made the guy stand in the box while he transitioned from Ableton → CDJ’s → TT’s and back again. We have never seen the guy since.
If they STILL bother you ask them what they want and do it. Enjoy your life living under others convictions NEVER standing up for what you are and like without ever having the balls to say “Listen, you sweet looking piece of ass, want a DJ battle? Im ready for shits like you any day. Loser will have to bend on all fours for the winner to fuck all day and night long”.
Im pretty sure they wont bother you again. Maybe wont even talk or look at you again.
I think you guys took that the wrong way, I don’t care what they think about what I’m using but I just think it would be fun to pick out the massive flaw in the argument… things change.
I still think to ignore is the better approach. Every time this is raised it will just cause a lot of debate and old wounds are opened. You can’t justify some people that are stuck with a certain work flow they learned long time ago have prejudices. Put yourself into their head – they spent weeks and weeks perfecting beat syncing with turntables and now see young kids do it easily and even bypassing that by mixing multiple tracks together.
I think it’s kind of pathetic and childish to make a video trying to justify what you use to DJ honestly. It kind of gives validity to their argument and shows how insecure you are about it.
You are not going to win illogical people over with logic.
just use anything you are comfortable with plain and simple. i’ve heard and seen people using good mac laptops and top notch midi controllers using the synch button but still sound like crap even with synch on with the mix going haywire, eqing is off, transitions totally don’t go well between two tracks, there is no flow at all and vice versa, people using cdj2000 with the latest high end brand mixer or turntables even with perfect beatmatching and still sound like crap. so what’s my point just do and make full use of what you are using to your fullest capabilities and be good at what you are using it’s not how the equipments make of you it’s how you make of your equipments. therefore synching don’t mean you would be good by so called getting the tracks beatmatched for you but its how you make of the synching capability to somehow do more than the so called industry standard workflow. i’m a full on midi controller person and i use the synch but hey i definitely have to make sure that i can do way more in my workflow as compared to the industry standard workflow. but by me using the synch button don’t mean that i can’t beatmatched though. sigh i don’t get why people are sooooo bothered on whether to synch or not to synch or having the perception that i have to use industry standard set-ups or not so as to getting the approval of peers or people in your own scene. whatever you are comfortable using, whatever you are comfortable using plain and simple. anyways xone the only way to kill this crappy argument is not to even ask people questions regarding this crappy argument plain and simple. questions on whether people can do without a laptop or not or whatever. it’s whatever their choice on how they wanna go about their workflow. instead it would be more productive informing people on new techniques or ways to improve their mixes creatively which are more important. i want to come to a forum where i can learn new things not to have doubts on gaining on acceptance regarding questions like this.
