HP Envy 14

HP Envy 14

Hey DJTT,

Was just wondering if anyone has owned or had any expeirience with one of these? I’ve managed to find a brand new one for £699, and it seems to be a really nice mac alternative. I’ll be using it for everything, Cubase, Traktor, Photoshop and Office.

Im getting a new laptop cos my plastic Sony VAIO is now completely fucked from me being way too rough with it (the hard drive connection has become temporamental and sometimes just dies mid-set leading me to always ask for an extra CDJ at gigs so i can whack a pre-mix on and reboot the computer). But the HP is all metal and seems really rugged.

So yeah, even if you haven’t had one, what do we reckon of it? Can anyone suggest anything better for the cash?

There is a member here on DJTT that swears by the Hp Envy and he loves it.

His user name is “xtianw”, try shooting him a PM, I’m sure he’ll be glad to answer some of your questions about it.

Cheers man, just did a search and found this epic post by him!
Pretty much persuaded me to get it!

HP’s turn into fireballs after 3 -4 hours of use, MacBook’s don’t.. enough said

No they don’t. I run an HP and it runs just fine.

huh?

Both my parents had HP’s… They get so hot you get a burn.. MacBooks stay cool except under EXTREME cpu load

You gotta be shitting me. First off, the only time I’ve gotten mine really hot is after playing COD for about 4 hours. And second, you’ve never used a macbook pro and had it sitting on your lap, have you? Or are you talking about the base macbook?

Currently loving mine, had it for about a month and its all the firepower you will ever need for traktor and ableton or anything else. I get about 4 ms latency in traktor at the moment and have had absolutely 0 problems with drivers and compatibility. Its also built like a tank with its magnesium and aluminum chasis. Btw, don’t worry about heat issues with this one, it runs super cool and silent unless I’m cranking up the graphics in Crysis 2 (its very nice to go to best buy and know full well that you can play any game on their shelves at native resolution )

My only real gripe with it is the battery only lasts about 4 hours on the intel gpu, though, honestly, I prefer it plugged in. Otherwise, its a fantastic machine an I highly recommend it.

Both my parents had Hp’s, and they got so hot you would get a burn after 3-4 hours.. MacBooks can get warm, but that takes gaming or 3 hours of ridiculously high cpu use…and traktor doesn’t like to use high cpu percentages

Hate to break it to you sweetie but it’s going to vary depending on the model.
An company isn’t going to deliberately build every single item they make to have one specific crippling flaw.

Were these laptops rather cheap by any chance?

how odd since I have a HP G62 AMD dualcore laptop… gets pretty warm after a while from watching anime or playing flash games but traktor on the otherhand keeps the laptop cool.

BTW keeping a laptop like HP on your lap and not on some kind of surface is a BAD idea since you will most likely be covering the intake to the CPU fan…
No Air = Hot Temps

Oh laptops. Why do you taunt me so?

You look like I should be able to use you in bed, but alas, no, you melt and die in the covers.

I have a lapdesk XD It’s pretty much a thin slab of wood.

right there is where the heat comes in. AMD’s low end processors are notorious for being hot on all laptops. Even their high end processors (phenom II) tend to run a little too toasty.
Hp’s Envy line only runs intel cpu’s. Truth be told, the i7 models tend to run a little hot, but the i5 model (which I run) is very good with heat management and only truly heats up when I’m turning up the graphics on THE most intensive game in existance, Crysis (and I’m talking native res, 8x anti-aliasing, high res textures and shadowing, major post processing, the whole shabang)

Take you only read that part and not the rest of my post. Congrats

Also Crysis isnt all that insane anymore, Metro2033 on DX11
but really I dont game on my laptop. I have a Gaming PC for that.

metro 2033 doesn’t support dx11, so im not sure what your talking about there. honestly, thats not the point of my post (I’m not here to troll )

the point is that the HP Envy runs plenty cool, provides ample power, and a reliable machine for someone who prefers the windows operating system.

OP can rest assured that the HP Envy is an excellent choice for a laptop

I had an HP envy 14 for about a month when the screen just stopped working. It was their very high end version of it too. i7, 6gb RAm…all the good stuff. It just wasn’t that impressive IMO

Luckily they let me return it and i got a 2011 MBP which has less specs but seems to be running perfectly, faster, and i just like the feel of it overall so much more than the envy.

Also, when running the envy with my VCI-100 and Traktor Pro it would constantly stop playing music and output a really loud buzz that wouldn’t happen with my MBP.

So i’d say get a MBP for another like 100 dollars, you won’ regret it.

NOTE: My model could’ve just been a fluke, but overall it wasn’t impressive speed or anything.

Oh, and HP customer service is terrible.

Metro 2033 DX11 Google it bitch!
