…but here is the thing, Its at a 80’s club here in L.A. Called “The Breakfast Club”. The catch is they never play any Smiths/Morrissey or even Spanish Rock from the 80s. Its mostly a 80s New Wave/Darkwave/Post Punk/Electro 2005-2008/Goth+Industrial. It where all the cool kids go that listen to dark music during the week.
Ok the real catch. The main DJ still plays on Vinyl and I get hated on for using a laptop. They do have 1200’s and a dual cd player…but TBH it sounds like crap.
Should I just say the hell with it and play digital, DVS, or just bring my Smiths Vinyl?
but seriously, id say do what you do, how you do it, and strive to do it better. best feeling is when someone gives you shit for not being able to do something (or do something different) and you throw down and blow em away.
maybe to save face go DVS? or bring the vinyl? fuck it… id just go with my lappy and controller… whatever you feel most comfortable with…
… ive had other DJ’s in clubs ive played at hate on me because i wasnt using Vynil or CDJs, Just a VCI with a mapping simmilar to eans, and then by the end of my set, they were all in the DJ booth watching me going… WHOOA howd you do that? but isnt the jog wheel supposed to do that? what? i thought that was the play button before… how did it change to that? Why isnt the volume changing when your using the faders, and how are they doing that instead?
Its strickly hits from the Smiths with b-sides and rare remixes, and early demo stuff. I usually get to play 30 mins more after the Smiths set, so Ill will sneak in Modest Mouse - Dashboard and Electronic - Getting Away With it.
Dude take it from a Moz fan. Play some decent Smith songs and we Smiths fan will love you. Stay away from “Panic” or “Ask” (Yawn!) and play stuff like “Still Ill” “London” “You’ve Got Everything Now” and just for good measure throw in some “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others” and the dance floor will be in the palm of your hand the whole night. Be brave you don’t have to stick to staple Smiths songs, we have heard them all surprise us with other great Smith tunes instead. But you probably won’t get out of the DJ booth alive without playing “How Soon…”
Just sayin’ some DJ just play the standard Smiths stuff. If there are any fans in the crowd they will go rock raving nuts if he played something they don’t get to hear all the time. Which would mean they will request to have him back and maybe offer him another gig there or elsewhere. But usually DJs play it safe and give you the same old same old. Sure its always good to hear a Smiths tune on the floor but way better when its something you don’t normally hear.
I think I have been to the Breakfast Club once before. I have friends that frequented the place more often. So good luck Bro!
