I know its been discussed before but…video in traktor?
hey all
I know its been mentioned before but couldn’t find much in search. Have Traktor/NI gave any sort of hints or ideas at all about a video plug in or functionality?
For the last week or two its been in my head and the more i think about it the more i think its really something i wanna get into, and the edge it would give me over most other local DJ’s in terms of getting some more work and stuff would be not insignificant.
I know I could always switch to VDJ but having invested a lot of time and money into Traktor and getting it all set up with my VCI and stuff and running really well, i’m reluctant to think about changing again.
In the past NI did have a job posting for someone that could add video to there product line, aside from that. Not too much has been heard, maybe they might have something up there sleeve for NAMM 2010
i hope that Traktor never supports video. Its King when it comes to 4-deck mixing and effects, but video is another pair of shoes imo. Too much can be too much sometimes.
Amen to that, id much prefer to them to master the audio side of things before getting into the video side of things. Theres still a HUGE amount of unexplored territory in the audio domain that needs to be covered before thinking about working on video too in my opinion.
What i dont get is this clammer for every DJ program to all do the same thing.
Why does Traktor “have to have” video just because VDJ and SSL do it.
Yes i know you have to keep up with the competition etc but Traktor does so many things that other programs either cant or simply dont match.
Why cant Traktor just try to be the best DJ software for DJs ?
Look at where Traktor is now and the path its taken over the past few years. 4 decks , 24 FX, incredible Loop and hot cue features. That is where its strength is. Im not convinced that these features can be used to the full potential if you are trying to incorporate video.
I know i certainly dont have the time during my mixes to be messing with video as well.
Yes i know it can add to a stunning show if done properly but id say the any Video DJ will say that a DJ alone cant do the job well enough and DJ at the same time and that its just a gimmick for most.
I know people will disagree but ask yourself, when you have seen Video used by DJs is it any good or is it just a guy playing a Beyonce tune on a big screen .
Video in Traktor will not turn you into Coldcut (video DJ pioneers and developers of the Pioneer VCDJ).
NI are supposedly exploring this but for the record i will oppose it at every opportunity because i think its a gimmick .
maybe if they were to just make a different “version” of traktor for video. like traktor pro vs. traktor scratch pro vs. traktor duo, you know? that way they can still keep the interface for the people who don’t really care for VDJ’ing, but please those who do.
Video is a whole different thing. Its not just audio, where a dj can focus on fx, mixing, tricks and stuff. Its a complete second sense beeing tickled. Videos can destroy a performance, but on the other hand it can be the icing on the cake. With the right set one can create a atmosphere which wouldnt be without video, like for example black and white videos or nature recordings for chilly music, or epileptic visuals for electro.
FTR, everytime i play videos its mash-up style, never just a single Beyonce track for the length of the record on a flatscreen.
And just like mixing A/V wont turn you into Coldcut, mixing 4 decks wont turn you into insert famous EDM DJ.
I think video in the main application would be a mistake. That said, I would love to see NI make a backplane for inter-program communication, and create a series of plug ins for Traktor and their other apps. OSC would have been great for this, but I don’t think NI is doing anything with OSC anymore.
word. Coldcut travels with 2 VJs for their lives shows… if that gives some scope into what it takes to have a GOOD visuals show in addition to the djing.
I think the idea of being able to control both audio and visual is interesting to all of us but it isn’t very practical without the aid of a dedicated VJ to assist in the performance - so having an all-in-one program is completely unnecessary.
What I would like to see is some kind of partnership between Traktor and a VJ software like Resolume to come up with a “Rewire” type system so that a standalone VJ software could easily receive audio input, midi messages, tempo and cue point messages to trigger events/parameters within the VJ software.
my 2 cents.
I am a big room dj. i play 5 minute long beyonce house remix videos on DVJ-X1’s. i dunno, the crowd and i think its fun
i’d like to see video in Traktor. i think it would be cool. traktor has opened up a lot of creative things for me in the audio dept, that id love that to be represented on the flat screens around the bar.
My issue with video integration is that Native Instruments is an audio company. Adding video is not an easy thing to do, and to do it well would mean adding an entirely new team which would lead to customers footing the bill. Traktor is a great piece of software right now, and tying up the development process to integrate something like video just isn’t an option. I would rather see them add more effects, more useful features, fix bugs, etc. than put in a feature that I will probably never use.
There are already tons of pieces of VJing software out there and I don’t think that Native Instruments needs to jump into the fray.
