But once I heard about Calc for Engineers I kinda made a sad face. I want to be a DJ to pay the bills but my dad isn’t a major disco producer, ala Thomas Bangalter, so I know my chances of even owning a house on a DJ’s wage would be nill. I would like to do what most of my friends have done, and that is drop out, get a GED and follow my dreams. But I just can’t seem to do it. Living with a single mom my entire life I has given me persistence but would an education later in life not be the same as me getting one now that I’m about to attend the Uni?
Go to school and get a degree. Get a job after graduation. DJ on the side (starting now) to test out the waters. If you feel you can make the jump to just DJing from DJing and your job, do it. And hey, you could get a degree somewhere in the technical side of music.
Go to school. If your dream is to make music, you can get into a music career MANY ways. If you don’t go to school, your options diminish greatly. Not only that, but if you find out that your dream isn’t really for you, you’ll have a degree that will help keep you on your feet.
I may not be wearing a big mouse head/mask, or have people come to my gigs to watch my LED cube, but…
I released a few tracks on a prominent Detroit label this year…
Held a club residence for 10 years…
Played all the major clubs I used to visit (thinking.. “one day I’ll play here”)
Been invited to play in countries I would never have otherwise had the chance to visit…
Truth be told, I love playing/performing more than I love getting paid…
BUT.. my NetSec job affords me a nice place to come home to; complete with a nice deck, grill and big backyard. (and I have the best music at my neighborhood parties, and neighbors don’t know I play!! hahaha)
This community is giving you straight up good advice… go to school friend… you’ll figure out the balance.
Thanks man. I know we had this talk before. But I guess I was scared when I heard math. I’m just not as good as I should be. Geometry is my bitch but I don’t know anything beyond that. Computer’s just kinda do it all for me. I guess that’s what attracted me as a kid.
well for you fear of maths from my experience its like its not about you being able to calculate this and that without any tools, but rather about understanding how something can be calculated. A friend of mine who was never good in maths and hated it in school now studys engineering and he loves it, because its way different then school maths he says.
maybe you should try to get a practical course throughout the holidays or something like this, so you can see if youd fit the job that your interested in.
I love hacking. I’m about to turn my T60 into a hackint0sh. I hacked the school network so I can cruize t3h nets without censorage. I love hacking because of the power and legality of it. I’ve built my own Linux Kernal from scratch just to get a video driver working. Hell I’d write my own zero day exploits if I knew assembly. I don’t think I’ll never not love hacking. I know working for a company as a network admin or sys admin or whatever isn’t the same but it’s getting paid for something I love.
well, then wheres the problem? just go for it. if you work for a network security company you’ll prolly hack sheet all day to test its security
and if your really into it i dont see where the academic training (can i even say that? Dschörmaneh not good englisch ) would hurt you
Do both. College is great in that it allows you to get that degree and DJ. I’m 37, just lost a $70k job, and am trying to pay the bills with DJing. Its damn near impossible. Most every DJ I know has a ‘real’ job, even though they may have 3 or 4 residencies. It’s a grind. I’ve got a couple residencies, but they are more for paying bills, not for making a living. Nosferatu put it real well "go to school friend… you’ll figure out the balance
Like…dude…at least take it or read a few wiki articles or something before you make that kind of decision.
I’m not saying calculus is easy, but…for a lot of people, it’s the math that makes all the other math make sense. You say you’re good at geometry…well that’s all derived from calculus. If you’re already good at that, imagine how you’ll feel when you know why all those rules and formulae are the way they are.
Calculus isn’t that bad. Some teachers can really suck (especially at some universities), but the material is pretty straightforward. You just have to learn a new “language” with some symbols in it so you can understand what’s going on.
