Great on style, I was just wondering if anyone out there have a pair or can comment on sound quality. They look dope, and I dont honestly see the point of spending over 100 bucks for headphones.
those mode/stylish cans are great for “outdoor” ie stick it in your ipod and rock your busride, but for DJing you will find them kinda enough and after a year of heavy usage you will go and buy proper DJ cans anyway, so save your money and look into some respected DJ products.
cant comment the sound quality, but for normal listening they are okay (a friend’s reference).
Cheap shit is cheap shit. In my opinion and experience, for DJing, Skullcandy’s blow. I’m of the mindset that anyone who says they are good for DJing has never DJ’d on anything better. You might not think there is a justification for spending more than $100, but I bought a whole bunch of headphones for under that and they all sucked. I got my HD25-II’s and have had them longer than any other pair. They’ve already paid for themselves twice, have taken a beating and keep on going.
Skull Candy Headphones are shit. Sound shit, and last 2 minutes.
I know a guy who bought some. I dont like the guy so i found it funny that they stopped working on the first gig he used them.
The cable. is very very weak.
At my Friday gig (which ive done for longer than i can remember) we have a Headphone Graveyard. All the busted headphones get thrown on top of the amp room. There has to be 50 pairs of shit headphones up there.
I finally moved away from the cheapo Sony ones i used for years. And got some HD25-II’s… best headphones i ever used.
Most likely those AKG’s will break. They have two pressure points. The swivel at the end of the bases, and the swivel for the ear cups.
I had a pair of Pioneer headphones, can’t remember the brand. I’m a rather active DJ, headbanging, getting into it, dancing, things get abused in that process. WEll, those $100 headphones lasted 6 months before one of the cups broke. Then another 2 months before the other one did. Then I used zip ties to put them together. THEN the actual swivel balls broke. Couldn’t fix that.
So yeah, once again, buy cheap get cheap.
They’ll work, but also keep in mind they say they are for small clubs and house parties. To me that says they have shit sound isolation, which = shit mixing.
maybe if you`re looking for a cheapo pair with acceptable sound you might want to check out the Sennheiser HD 205 which are just loud enough for the occasional gig. I compared them with the AKGs 81 you mentioned and preferred them.far better sound quality but less bass though. I also found them to be more comfortable on my fat head
I also used to have a pair of old studio AKGs but the 81 dj didn’t sound anything like them at all
Those skullcandy’s are the exact same as the american audio hp700’s. Which are also the same as the fake Pioneer HDJ 1000s I just bought on ebay. I ended up getting them for free and they aren’t bad headphones for the 50 dollars I originally paid for them. I wouldn’t pay the $150 like those skullcandies
I got those SK pros for free and I absolutely love them. I have had shitty luck with skull candys in the past, so if you opt for them make sure you can always keep them safe in your DJ bag, which can be a challenge if you’re as rough on it as me. Anyways, back to the SK’s…Sound quality is great, they dont really fit over my ears securely, so If you want something to sort of isolate you, so you can work without as much distraction these aren’t the headphones for you.
I’ve used skull candies for a while, and I can’t honestly recommend them. I just had my third pair break on me (First one in a fight, second one on a trip, third because of fsck-if-I-know, and all in the same place too) and I’m going to go with the Senns Dvls and Karlos are recommending.
So yeah, I don’t hate them on the level as some of the other people here (but then, I haven’t had the opportunity to use anything better), but I’d still say go with something else, if only because of the build quality.
FYI: I was just at Marshalls (the retail discount department store) and they had the most expensive Skull Candy DJ headphones there for $39… its the white and blue ones listed on their site for $150… I was surprised cause I was reading this thread this morning. Also I know they have the Skull Candy Paul Frank DJ headphones at Target here for $39.
Anyways, I know nothing about them, but I use the little cheap earbuds from Skull Candy for my iPod. They do the trick.
I would suggest saving though and spending a little more on a proper pair of headphones.
That’s an opinion but quality comes with the price, and you can have a shitty mixer and good headphones you’ll still be good (if you are) the opposite isn’t really true. Headphones are waaaaaaaay important. Dont’ underestimate this piece of gear, that’s a noob assumption (not specifically talking about you here).
Yeah, headphones are pretty important. For the past year and a half i have been using IEM’s and I really like them. For me they are an important piece of equipment. Sure i can pick up any set of headphones and mix if i had to, but I don’t want to… I think people need to find headphones they are comfortable with, but I think maybe people who think that they are fine with low end headphones haven’t truly listened through good headphones to understand the difference. Headphones are like our baseball gloves, yeah you can borrow somebody’s extra glove, but you should really have your own good one!
i also use some for my psypod. “smokin buds” i think they are called. i got small ears so gotta ram them in there but nice sound. i’d go for a well known brand for djin tho.
I have Skullcandy inner ear buds just for my ipod. The cable has crapped out on me 3 times and prety fast i might add. They come with a lifetime warranty but its a big pain in the ass to keep sending them back to the company for new ones and that costs shipping and handling as well. And last time i did that, the ones i got back sounded pretty bad.
They’re a fashion statement in my opinion more than anything else. A few of my friends have owned Skullcandy headphones and they all agree theyre crap, and they usually putter out after a few months. I suggest audiocubes or turntablelab when it comes to searching for cost effective solution. Or good ol’ craigslist
