Looking for some advice from anyone who owns in ear monitors.
I often play in clubs with loud speaker systems but without monitors. In theory could you plug your IEMs into your monitor out, set the monitors to play the master out, and then still use your headphones to prefade. i.e. get the IEMs to represent what is playing on the master?
Most mixers will allow you to balance between the “cue” and the “master” channels, so you can match levels before you mix in, and also turn the master down in your cans/IEMs so you can get your beatmatching right, etc etc.
I use the Shure in ears, and I love them. The one thing that becomes really annoying is requests, because they can be a bit of a pain to get in and out and have a good solid seal. The reason I prefer them is many places have shit for monitors, and at the end of the night my ears thank me for not blasting the music. As previous posters have mentioned, most mixers, dj software, etc, has a way to split cue, then switch to master out, so that you can hear your entire mix inside the headphones. I find it harder to distinguish final levels though, as the increase doesn’t quite seem so in your face, as it does with regular monitors, but that just makes me use the VU meters that much more.
