iPad=Gig Viable? Hmm..

I just recently found out that with an Ad-Hoc network set up, I can route TouchOsc to my MacBook Pro in a no wifi zone (where I gig in)
This is a game changer- for a small 2 hour top40 set, i could show up with an iPad, MacBook , soundcard, and cans instead of my big heavy S4 in its flight case..
Would you do so?

Actually you should always use ad-hoc. The latency is far superior and less worries of losing connection.
Two iPads plus a club mixer is much more than viable, but I have found controlling volume with the touch screen “un-fun”.
I use a WRT54GL with tomato firmware, a MacBook Pro and TouchOSC.
Using a router is much safter than ad-hoc.
I am currently using TouchOSC as my mixer controlling Ableton Live. I would not recommend this, it does not work for faders/knobs. I am only doing this because I cannot spend any money at the moment and have set the rule that I must make do with what I already own.
In the future I would use the iPad for “non-time-sensitive” use. Something like a step sequencer whereby you can program step on/off and it doesn’t matter when you press the “buttons” or if you make a mistake cos you can quickly fix it.
I would still take the s4, did a ipad only gig a few weeks back, i hated it.
I think it’s safe to say most of us want a physical mixer, may it be an installed club mixer or the S4. For me the biggest difference is not that it’s a pad instead of knobs and faders, but it’s more that with the iPad you have to look at it, at least before and most of the time while you control it. Similar to how typing is cumbersome when you can’t blind-touch.
(Wait…what if you practice blind-touching the iPad…I may be onto something…)
