Is 2-step/UK garage still being made ?

Is 2-step/UK garage still being made ?

Back in 2000 there was a short lived scene in the UK called UK garage which became 2-step … then disappeared (almost) into Dubstep. Artful Dodger & Craig David, DJ Luck & MC Neat, Ms Dynamite etc. were the main artists at that time.

Eleven years on I still love the sound but can’t seem to find any new artists, is anyone still making this sound, and I now looking for the wrong naming (i.e.. it’s changed names again).

Any help would be appreciated.

Garage is still going. Its not my scene but have a listen radio 1xtra and have a look around there website. Garage was defiantly not short lived (at least where I live).

try juno.co.uk

Would anyone mind sharing some 2-step tunes? I went to a sorta combined 2-step/dnb/dubstep party a while back and heard some good stuff that wasn’t quite as “cheesy” as what you get when you do a google for 2-step Garage.

unfortunately i have now emigrated to Barcelona, so listening to UK based radio /TV is almost impossible (even using VPN, proxies etc,).

The stuff I’ve listened to lately thats described as 2-step / garage isn’t close to the original sound …but i’ll take your advice and pop over to juno.co.uk to see if I can find a couple of good tracks.

Thanks

and if anyone has a list of modern UK garage artists I’d appreciate it greatly.

???

???.

I was speaking from my perspective, the original sound of UK Garage quickly changed. losing a lot of the “soul” that was in it, in favour of street styled rappers … (again from my perspective).

I fink you is talking about grime there bruv

Anyway, garage is still about, a lot of it’s got pretty po-faced, a lot of people call some of it ‘future garage’ (except the producers), and a lot of it has nicked stuff from dubstep, bass music and whatever people are calling ‘post dubstep’ this week.

genre names change every week, that’s why I said UK garage. That melodic soulful vibe that was made famous by the likes of MC Cole, Artful Dodger, early Miss Dynamite back in 2000-2001. It was born out of (again from my perspective) original jungle (moving shadow etc.)

I’m not interested in what’s called “UKG” now (name taken from the forums in the UK), it’s far to hard and glitchy, If i want glitchy i’d prefer Crookers etc.

Maybe someone can give me this weeks genre name for the sound I am looking for, i suppose that’s the best way to start searching…

but thanks for the “future garage” links, i’ll definitely give them a listen.

both nice tunes, but not what I was looking for … the first reminds me of as you say “bass music” and the second although using a classic sample, is just a bit weak .. when i say weak, i’m looking for that soulful vibe like:-

Rosie Gains - Closer than close
SFA - Flowers
B15 - Girls like this

I know they are all old and had some commercial success, but this is what I would call UK Garage or 2-step …

any thoughts?

people are correct. UK garage has changed some what. just the same as hard house was originally Trade tony de vit stuff like mrs woods. but after 10 years turned into almost NRG after bounce. Garage has added the post dub element into it i recently. I bought dot 2 dot by skittles the other week (Account Suspended) which has garage mc’ing over it. also try Wiley (Account Suspended) probably the first mass dubstep tune producer but who still kept those uk garage roots

I’m with you LeeZer.

Though the next person to call dubstep dub is gonna get a sledge to the face, I swear.

By sledge, I of course mean sledgehammer, which is obviously quite different from a sledge.

thanks for that, very nice and just going through the mixes now to see which ones i’ll DL … not exactly what i was looking for, but a great find anyway.

There’s a lot out there with similar vibes to the older Garage sound but it can be hard to track down as the producers making it generally don’t stick to that one sound these days.

i apologise for the typo … as that is what it was … however I do come from a time when it was all very much simpler. Unless you are buried up to your neck in a particular genre/style then it’s impossible to keep up with the breakoff genres. Now if you want to discuss the variations of soul or R&B, I could be far more accurate to the point of being completely anal.

 hehehe… the dub has been around since the 60s but yeah guilty as charged

you can get most of the classics cheap @ itunes http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/dj-ez-the-essential-garage/id318703007 for £9.99 for 57 tracks

It’s UK Garage that got me into DJ’ing in the first place. While all my mates were out listening to Eminem and the like in the early 2000’s (?) I was saving up my hard earned for UKG Vinyl (“Bingo Records” anyone?). I find the best place to get it all now is from eBay where usually people are selling it in bulk.

And for the UK listeners, EZ does a UKG set pretty much every Friday night at 10pm, Kiss FM.

I’ve tried and failed many times to produce some original UKG, cause without using sampled drum or piano loops, I can’t seem to get that soulful upbeat feel (i.e. Todd Edwards) that I’m after!

i was interested in if there are artists today .. but thanks anyway

BTW i have 80% of that list on 12"

loopmasters do loads of good garage loops and instruments. add some minimal effects and sounds into it. try phase warping beats and samples to create a groove. the 80’s and 90’s have loads of soulful vocals and sax you can sample in. I know what you mean when you can just get it right. but i believe the tools and stuff is still out there. technology has become cheaper and the internet is massive compared to 10 years back even. so i’d say don’t give up
