Is there any way to mash 2 different midi controllers together??
What i mean by this is ive found a top half (no keys) of one midi keboard and the bottom half (JUST keys) of another one. is there any way i could mod these together to make my own?? im a novice at electronics and im working on my first DIY with an old 3rd party xbox controller. ill have pics up of the demo soon!
Sure there is. And it can be fairly easy to do.
First off, which 2 keyboards do you have.
Now the top half one, what’s the problem with the keys on it, or do you just like the feel of the other one better?
Do they have the same amount of keys?
Most smaller keyboards use a single 20 pin connector, and most larger ones use two 16 pin connectors.
So your best bet is to crack them both open and see if they fit. If not take some pictures while you have them open, then post them on here and i’ll see if i can help.
im getting the top half of an oxygen 8 and the bottom half of an ozone. if im lucky ill be getting them in the next 5 days or so. Ebay is a magical thing
i got that. it just seems like a lot of trouble to go thru for what is going to be a frankensteined mashup of a relatively inexpensive controller. i guess what i mean it, wouldn’t it be easier just to get one working controller? maybe i missed some benefit you were looking to get out of using these two partials…
well im getting both for under 50$ so im thinking with each one costing over 100$ im making out like a bandit with all the extra keys im getting from the ozone, plus the 2 mod wheels and 8 pots on the oxy. plus ill add my own mods to it once i get done with my wedding im having in about a week. Thats the big thing holding me down from my dj’ing and modding venture. Weddings are frickin’ expensive!!!
ah ok. and i didn’t think about doubling up some of the other controls like that. if you were just trying to get one working controller, it seems like you could prolly find a used oxygen8 for $100 or less, but it sounds like you’re doing more than that.
definitely post some stuff up once you get into. it’s always fun to see these projects go together. and congrats on the wedding
Here are the items im talking about. I hesitated on these because they were so rock bottom. And im getting a good deal on shipping. All in all 19$ for both pieces
Looks like the mod and pitch wheels should hook right up to the white connectors on the left of the ozone. And the big ribbon is most likely to hook up the knobs, they probably won’t hook right up, as the oxy8 has less knobs than the ozone, but it should be easy to figure out which to hook up with a voltmeter. Then you could hook up a couple extra knobs/sliders. And you can order a replacement lcd unit from m-audio’s repairs department at 626-633-9055, i got that number from a post on the m-audio forums.
Then you’ll have a custom ozone for way less than the original cost. Hell yeah.
yea ill probably toss in the xbox mod with that. ill have 10 buttons plus 4 more pots coming of that controller. all i gotta do now is get my iTouchMidi set up tweaked just so and ill have a nice setup for < 120$. As soon as the shipment gets in ill post some pics and some mock ups of what i got in mind.
im trying to think of a name for this monster… i may put a poll up when i get into it heavy though…
so i got my parts in today. got the bottom and looked it over. there seems to be an 8 pin ribbon that will match w/ the 8 pot bank on the oxy 8. however theres a 20 pin ribbon that would reach to where the original pots would be. ive got power hooked up to the keyboard and a usb but no response… im curious as to how this will work out…
so i got the ozone workign with traktor and ableton. it seems when i shut off the ozone it freeze the pc for a minute then comes back. once the pc comes back i dont have any functionallity. i dont know if this is from the ozone lacking half of its intended parts or if its just windows vista 32bit. also if anyone has any ideas on how to add 2 more pots and a cross fader to this setup pictured below(pots and 2 buttons of the oxygen 8) id really appreciate it. it also needs an 8 pin to 20 pin (both ribbons) converter if that actually exists.
I cant see the pics now but because of your ribbon situation, sound like you need to do some soldering. Just strip the ribbon wires and solder it to a copper pref board (get it at radio shack). Then to the pots. Hopefully that makes since?
