It’s always cool to see studio/project play throughs from producers you respect [VID]
I discovered Alex Di Stefano after the whole Modular Punk drama and really like his style.
Thought this was pretty cool, it’s one thing to try to pick apart a track while you’re listening to it to try to figure out what’s going on and another to see it. Looks like he’s got a lot of intricate automation and arrangement and lots of plug ins plus some outboard stuff. I see a Doepfer dark energy and a small Doepfer Eurorack modular, can’t ID any other outboard.
Now can anyone ID the plugs on the right screen? I see a waves one knob filter, not sure about the rest.
This video also makes me realize just how sad ableton’s arrange view is compared to some other DAWs, I really hope Live 9 is better or bitwig comes out soon.
Don’t get me wrong I love ableton but there are some big things lacking from it. Rather then rehash it here this pretty much sums up my complaints with ableton arrange:
Also add to that no automation curves too and some of the other things discussed in the thread.
I know about the issues you quoted, and there are some very easy work arounds in Ableton for a lot of the stuff he mentioned (except for the mixer issue, but that’s not as big of a deal as I think they’re making it out to be).
And yes, it does suck they don’t have automation curves. Just have to grab a knob and record it yourself on the fly.
For the automation thing I’m totally on board. I usually have to take a break after automatic because of how frustrating and irritating it is to create curves using small lines.
Other thing I don’t like is that there is no dual monitor support.
My relationship with Ableton Live is becoming complicated. Can’t live without it, but these small things that you would have thought they’d have addressed by now are still here. I’m just waiting for Bitwig. Unless Live 9 is a big improvement, Bitwig seems to be the better DAW for me
Back on topic, this dude has some really great sound design and arrangement. Additionally curious what FX he is using around 2:45 to get that pitched motor accelerating effect.
Thanks for sharing this video. I like producers showing their work and maybe even having a look behind the scenes as well! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to identify one more of his plugins or outboard gear either… Doesn’t seem to be the standard mainstream stuff.
Apart from that I highly recommend the series of videos the Future Music magazine has upoaded on youtube where famous producers like Swedish House Mafia, Nicky Romero, Thomas Gold etc. show how they managed to create one of their tracks. Very interesting, helpful and inspiring!
I’m sure this can be answered as a sound design issue. Think of the typical F1 motor sound. A cosworth v8 with a single plane crankshaft will basically output a rounded square wave as an exhaust pulse (voicing would be cylinders exhausting, 4 in this case), shaped by the exhaust port bore and tubing width and length (Cutoff and delay). So you could make the sound using a pretty basic synth and some reverb. I think I’ll have a go at making it, actually.
