Evening all, I read the home page skrillex entry and was watching the video when a co-worker came along and started talking about how he listens to techno too…my face >
I try to explain to him that there are differerent types of EDM and he asked wtf is EDM.
Is there any easy to explain that all EDM is NOT TECHNO!!
Nope. Ignorance is bliss, and people have that perspective in the majority, at least here in the US.
I just tell them EDM = Electronic Dance Music, and that there are different styles, just like how you wouldn’t call “classic” rock “deathmetal” by any stretch. It usually shuts people up, or opens the door for me to explain to them and show different styles.
lol i used to rock comparison and then he went off on explaining the differences in rock. Pulled out good old youtube and let him hear the differences between trance, house, electro house and dubstep and it all sounds like techno to him.
Ummmmm NO! but thanks for playing we have some wonderful cancellation prizes.
I hate it when people just call it techno. or even after i explain it they say it just sounds like techno. Im sorry but my deep jazzy House sounds nothing like techno, here is a bowl of shut the hell up you ignorant twat.
You can try to explain it to him but afterward if he still acts like an ignorant twat just tell him rocks boring and the guitar is the 21st century version of the piano & watching guys shred a riff is the equivalent of watching a piano recital.
No. Don’t talk to co-workers. If they wanted to know, they’d find out themselves or ask someone.
Whenever someone says they listen to Techno, I respond “no, you don’t.” They argue with me, and I play some for them.
I haven’t been wrong yet.
Then I tak to them about EDM and offer to teach them about it. Once or twice, someone has gotten sorta-kinda into it. But, in general, if someone above the age of 16 hasn’t already decided they like dance music, they’re not going to. I joked about co-workers, but if someone is old enough to be a co-worker and doesn’t understand, I think it’s highly unlikely that they ever will. But, I don’t have faith in people.
Eh, IDK I started listening to EDM at around 18 or 19. I used to be one of those its all techno guys, but to be far this was the 90s and I grew in the underground punk scene here in LA. But to be far i probably wasnt the hardest sell since i was already in to NIN since the old days. once i heard jungle I was sold.
Politely tell them it’s not. Simply say there’s all kinds of electronic dance music and techno is just one type. If they seem curious or ask questions, enlighten them. If they don’t show any curiosity move on and don’t present yourself as a jerk by continuing to explain something they don’t care about.
