but if I’m looking into getting prepped to play out, and I’m coming from a production background (and am a controllerist, not a turntablist) should I be better off looking at Ableton instead of Traktor?
I have access to both, and have seen both used successfully, but I can’t tell any pro’s or cons really - just differences…
I see lots of live effects in Traktor, but not in Live (I could be missing some stuff though)
If I want to do stuff like this (which is done on Traktor) can all of this be done with Live? Or when clips are triggered (even with quantization off) do the whole clips play regardless of how long you hold down the button?
I will probably end up using both, but I’m wondering which is better to get invested in…
Live has way, way more effects options than Traktor, it’s not even close. Especially since you can build your own effects racks and control them anyway you want. I think out of the box Traktor is probably going to be a little easier to get into if you’re coming from a DJ background, where as Live will feel like it’s got more options if you’re coming from the producer side of things.
The closest I’ve gotten so far is Reason 5’s Kong (use it as a sampler sometimes) and I can do some interesting things on top of whatever is laid down in the background (almost like live production… sounds like an oxymoron…)
So clips in Live can be played only while the button is being held down (like a cue point)? If so then that should be easiest for me, since I might add some lead lines or drum lines real time during a remix… It would be nice. If not, I’d rather do it right than do it rigged…
There re a bunch of different launch modes in live… Including a one that you hold down the button. If I wasn’t on my phone I would find you a link to the live to peak at. reading the manual always helps me make descisions before buying new toys
they have a RIDICULOUS live production based show. It ain’t DJing, but it is awesome. If playing tracks one after the other is more your thing, Traktor or Serato (SSL or ITCH) will be better. They all have sample players.
I’m not the “play that tune that’s right for the moment” type. I’m more of a performer and hope that people will come to hear me do my thing, instead of come out because they trust my taste in music (that was not a jab at anyone who does that - I really don’t have the knack for it. Not saying traditional DJs aren’t artists!)
Mapped the LP to 4 decks in Traktor 2 Pro, 8 hotcues per deck, a play button per deck, beat jumps, and a couple other things.
Nano has the FX (channes 1-4) buttons for scrolling through dif. effects and button hold for fx on. Faders for fx amount and I’m not even using the knobs yet. fader 9 master gain, and pot 9 is xfade
Seems I’m almost competely set up and I’ve only been at it for an hour (and that includes playing around too much with the stuff, right?)
