just ordered my first mac! how do i get ready?

just ordered Apple MacBook Pro MD313LL…please let me know what i should do to prepare for my first macbook (knowledge wise), any links to shortcuts, guides, etc etc? gonna be using serato!

  1. Build an igloo with one small entrance

  2. Sit in the igloo and then block the entrance using the remaining snow

  3. Now, and only now that you are in total darkness can you be truly ready

Stay in the igloo until you hear the delivery man ring the doorbell then smash your way out of the igloo.

When you open the door throw confetti in his/her face and scream at the top of your lungs

“STEVE JOBS IS ALIVE INSIDE THIS PACKAGE”

Then, very slowly… i mean like over a 7 hour period tantric style, open the package and remove the macbook

Open it up, press the power icon and follow the onscreen instructions.

Once it has loaded, at the bottom of the screen will be a selection of “applications”. There’s one that looks like a compass… a wonderous program called Safari (which is better than any african jungle safari rubbish) then copy this link into the address bar and hit return.

Good luck, you may need it

hahaha priceless! but you totally nailed it!

I know ive posted this before and i know it angers some people but , hey ho.

Heres My Definitive Guide to Using / Tweaking a Mac.

  1. Turn It On.

End of Guide.

You completely forgot the smell !! … once you open the package you will be greeted with an overpowering pleasant artificial electronic smell that ONLY mac’s have when they are brand new.

You will probably sniff all other packaging from everything else you receive from that point on, trying to get that same “fix” .. the only way to get it again though is to buy another apple product, i’m sure thats how they do it

In relation to getting ready … errr,

  1. Start your New Mac follow the onscreen setup to register the product etc ..
  2. Install any updates (Apple on the top left / software update) - restart if needed.
  3. Use the aforementioned compass icon to open a web browser, go to the serato website and download it
  4. Install serato
  5. Plug in Serato device and open the program.
  6. Play.

The lack of needing to actually do anything at all really confuses so so so many people.

as soon as you opened safari, click on this link: http://bit.ly/wjvLQz

Have another pair of pants with you when you’re about to open it, you may soil them.

I have to say that i do love that new Mac smell… always a shame after you bring it back from a gig and that smell has gone… bit like its virginity.

hahaha Mac fanboys… love it.

you´ll love the trackpad gestures!!!

also, dont forget before opening the box, invite all your friends around so you can watch there faces turn green with envy when you unleash the beast

… but on a serious note, one of the first thing you might want to look into doing if you a pc guy, is figuring out how to right click on the track pad
(and as stated, you will love the trackpad once you get used to it)

and congrats on your first MBP

Turn off natural scrolling. It’s a dumb option.

And download quicksilver and start using it. Yes, it’s basically just an extensible app launcher, but it makes everything faster. But especially coming from windows, you’ll probably hate it. I couldn’t live without it (or gnome-do).

Every other piece of advice I have is for computer geeks. If you’re coming from Linux, you can use it like Linux without having to worry about x windows or recompiling your kernel. If you’re coming from windows…have fun. You now have a real computer.

Oh, and you don’t need to chase every update. SSL usually behaves, but it’s worth waiting a day or two to make sure it doesn’t break anything you depend on. The same would be true for windows if anyone gave a shit how they perform.

Make sure you open the package with care. The package alone is beautiful, everything fits perfectly. When you first hear that sound when the Mac is turned on, it’s sound like angels are calling!!!

Quoted for truth.

Most awesome feature my Macbook has, for sure!!

This thread concerns me…deeply.
So i’m gonna crap all over it. Like that Slavic puppet dog (forget its name) used to do.

Make a 25 minute unboxing video for YouTube, and don’t forget to do a lot of heavy breathing while you record.

Prepare your fingers for a workout

Once I got used to swipes for spaces, two finger right click and three finger drag lock for windows my mouse became competely redundant.

Spaces is another feature just I couldn’t live without, I always have wayyyy too much going on my screen(s).

Thankfully in 8 years of updates the only thing thats broken on me was the update to safari 3 which removed the blue status from the address bar (which was put back since)

i was curious and just sh*t myself! cheers :stuck_out_tongue:

wish id read this one first lol

Little apple icon on the top left. Click. Choose software updates (or whatever the hell it’s called). Follow instructions.

While that’s happening call all your friends and gloat.

Don’t forget to put your countries flag and name in your Task bar. Although im not that patriotic, some of you might be so its a nice tip.
