Laptop Screen/Keyboard to control Desktop…

I’m in the market for a new PC for when I buy Traktor (Scratch). I had the idea of buying a “Cube” style desktop machine - this would fit PERFECTLY in one of the recesses in my expedit DJ Desk. You get MUCH more power for your money buying a desktop vs. a laptop. (Portability is not an issue for me - I only play at home!)

Then I wondered where I’d put the screen and keyboard for the desktop.

Then I realised I’d have to get rid of my Uberstand, and would have nowhere for my auidio interface to live.

Then I thought - “I wonder if I could use my existing (old) laptop, as a keyboard/touchpad and display for the desktop?” That way, my set-up won’t change - but i’d get the power of the desktop machine…

So - can I? Does anyone know how to do it? I imagine it can be done with remote desktop - but neither of the machines (lappy or desktop) will be connected to the internet (both will be tweked for audio).

So basically, I want the laptop to behave ONLY as a keyboard and a monitor. The desktop would do all of the processing, and the poorer specs of teh laptop would not affect the desktops performance.

Not sure about your laptop, but mine only has a serial out. If you have a serial in or maybe hdmi in, you could do it. Why not wall mount a small flat screen monitor and lay the keyboard directly in front of it?

That’s Plan B - I’d prefer to use the laptop as teh display and the input device. I’m guessing I’ll need to set up a NW of some sort… MIGHT be easy with just 2 computers… (Then again - it might not!)

Anyone? I thought there might be a little more interest in this…

Anybody know if THIS:

would do the job? (IE - control a desktop from a laptop)

No that’s for using 1 keyboard, mouse and monitor with 2 computers.

VNC or remote desktop should do it altho there may be some latency and increase the load on the new box.

I went the other way and bought a some shelves to screw into my stand (big monitor shelf in the centre and CDJ stands either side for controllers, small keyboard and mouse).

Worth a look?

you could probably network them over usb and then use some kind of desktop sharing app? u said they won’t actually be properly networked but they need to interface somehow. http://synergy-foss.org/ would allow the mouse+keyboard to control the other pc but i guess you’d need some kind of desktop sharing if you want to use the laptops screen for the other machine. you could use some kind of capture device on the laptop and connect the video out of the other machine that way but i suspect it wouldn’t be awesome going from digital->analogue->digital like that
