Laptops for Music software and DJ'ing

I know there is a lot of gimps at pc world thats why ask on forums most of the time, im not looking for a pretty machine just something that i that can run smooth with no hiccups.

Any specific recommendations ? with decent ram 6gb +

whats the deal with i3, i5 and i7 is one better than the other , i stopped looking at specs of computer after vista came out so im not currently up to date.

would it be better to run an i5 with 6 gb of ram or a i7 on 4 gbram ?

You can upgrade the RAM later if you want and it’s not really expensive… the CPU, well you’re stuck with. I5 run perfectly though.

Little know laptop brand Lenovo makes very solid laptops at a very affordable price. I would highly recommend checking them out.

For example:

Little known? I hope that was sarcasm  … they made the laptops for IBM and around 2004 bought out IBM’s entire computer division hence the design and names (thinkpad/thinkcenter), they are one of the biggest computer manufacturers in the world with almost 15% market share.

Surely you mean 8gb ram 6gb would leave you without dual channel ? and Ram does completely different tasks than CPU horsepower, memory intensive tasks such as file caching, load to ram and dont rely on CPU.

Either an i5 or i7 will run pretty much any application you throw at it.

And deffo would not buy ram as an upgrade direct from the computer manufacturer unless it was a bargain (+£20 for the extra 4gb).

More ram is always better though and if you are planning to run machine or other apps alongside Traktor I’d go with 8gb.

I’m just speaking from personal experience, whenever I mention the brand, the majority of people I talk to have simply never heard of it.

I’m gettin’ this bad-boy next month! :tada:

What you think ?

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/asus-a53e-sx1339s-15-6-laptop-red-11884685-pdt.html

are the graphics cards anything to go by as well , i am a bit of a gamer and designer but i don’t really care ( just wondering) , just want a decent powerhouse

even though i hate pc world they will order the laptops for me and i can pay in store as my card does not work online , if anyone else can find anything better your help is very much appreciated

Given those two choices, I would definitely go with the Asus.

1.) Low-end Acer laptops are notorious for sucking in a big way. Cheap build-quality, etc.

2.) The Asus has a significant step up in processing power.

3.) Although the Asus comes with less RAM, you can easily upgrade it. The inferior Core i5 in the Acer is there to stay. There’s no upgrading that.

Everybody has it’s own favourite brand. I would never choose Asus over Acer for example.

And to the OP I can run Traktor and Ableton Live same time with my 2 years old i5 8gigs ram Acer.

I’m just speaking from personal experience.

My recommended laptop brand, for best bang for your buck + solid build quality, is neither Acer nor Asus. Lenovo currently takes the cake in this regard. In my humble opinion..

Yeah as I’m saying I’ve been rocking this for 2 years with 8 gigs ram upgrade and CPU never get past to 10%

So any i5 laptops with new ivy bridge processors should be fine.

And for that Asus, it is ugly as fuck it looks like you’ve borrowed it from your little sister.

From reading the reviews the asus sounds like a much cheaper build quality with the keyboard bending in ,

not sure as the i5 has 8 gb

but the i7 has 6gb

i am leaning more towards the acer if the i5 should run everythin ok , it £30 exstra little things make it better , even has a g force graphic card

Yea… typically, at this price point, solid build quality is a rarity. Kudos though for checking up on user reviews. That’s the way to shop! Personally I wouldn’t worry to much about RAM, since it’s an easy upgrade. I’d probably base my decision on average positive user reviews.

just found this lenovo , sounds like a beater

What do peeps think ?

The Acer in that comparison would likely be a better laptop for DJ’ing. Few programs are able to actually utilize four cores. In most cases, You’re really better off with a dual core processor at a higher clock. I’d rather go with a Core 2 Duo Extreme at 3ghz over a low-end i7 any day.

Regardless, all the laptops you’re looking at are consumer level laptops. They are built cheaply and have much higher failure rates than their corresponding business models - which is why I suggest to look around for a good used business notebook. And being consumer notebooks, they have low res screens, which is a bit of a deal killer for me. But any of the laptops that have been mentioned will run Traktor without a hitch.
