Learning hip hop djing after house

Learning hip hop djing after house

I’ve only djd house, techno, tech house etc. a bit of dnb and started a year ago.

I wanted to delve into hip hop and have been trying over the past few days but i’m realising it’s a lot harder. Is there anything to know to help learn it is easier. I’m finding the beats either just don’t work together or vocals clash so have been trying to use a lot of loops but I feel like I’m missing something.

Thanks

This is just like me, I’ve been a hip hop head for years, but I struggle to mix hip hop. It’s like my ears are just trained for dance music sort of thing.I’ve had my decks about year and half and 9 times out of ten I’m mixing house, garage, tech,Dnb etc so when I go to Mix hip hop I find it hard but I’ve just been lazy I havnt give it practise like dance music. DJ TLM has great videos on YouTube

Try EQ’ing the snares - you can almost match the sound of the snares by boosting/cutting the mid-range…

Also - high-hats are a minefield! Try to avoid mixing two songs that have lots of hat action going on…

I will continue this lesson later…

if you are beatmatching by ear, i find it easier to sometimes grab and drop by the snare. being that the beats are broken , and the snare acts like kind of a hinge… it just seems to make it easier to tell how far apart they are etc.

^abso-fucking-lutely! That is the KEY to learning to mix hip-hop, actually. :+1:
