I spent about 5 days configuring, tweaking, testing, installing, uninstalling, reinstalling and messing about getting Vista to do very basic stuff for me on my new 2.1 ghz duo, 4 gb ram, 128 mb graph, 7200 rpm hdd. It still doesn’t feel solid, maybe partly because I still have the visuals of win98 due to the OS sucky build.
Today I installed a PRE BETA (!!!) version ow Windows 7 (official beta set to drop in Jan 2009) on a 1.6 ghz duo, 2 gb ram (integrated motherboard graph) and 5400 rpm hdd. It took 30 min to setup, much due to the simple fact that all graph visuals are running all full, including transparency/glas/aero and whatever it’s called.
I installed third party audio drivers like Asio 4 all, ran Traktor FLAWLESS at the same time as running internet, antivirus, MSN, skype, firefox and thunderbird.
Just comparing the two machines (one of them being 3 years old) the old lappy with Win7 and all of those things running came to about 950 mb of memory usage while the brand new lappy with spanking specs is pushing 1.5 gb in memory just for start up without anything running.
Reading about Win7 it is overwhelming how positive people are about it.
I think we have a winner and Microsoft might finally regain some credibility that they had worked in so nicely with the XP SP2 and SP3.
Well reading between the lines of what Gates says about Windows 7 here:
Senior Vice President Bill Veghte stated that Windows 7 will not have the kind of compatibility issues with Vista that Vista has with previous versions:
[QUOTE]“ You’ve let us know you don’t want to face the kinds of incompatibility challenges with the next version of Windows you might have experienced early with Windows Vista. As a result, our approach with Windows 7 is to build off the same core architecture as Windows Vista so the investments you and our partners have made in Windows Vista will continue to pay off with Windows 7. Our goal is to ensure the migration process from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is straightforward.

Eeehhhh so, that means that its just vista, but prepared for the Internet2 takeover? OUR information all over the place?
Here is what I think and predict; In the end of 2009 you will see a massive drop on prices of HDD’s. WHY? Well, cause you wont need them anymore, everything is stored on the interwebz, all your information will be held in massive server landscapes. I know that this is already happening, as I used to work for a company that has one of these storage landscapes already setup for various companies in the US.
Personally, I think its scary, and I think people should react. My Reaction? Boycott of ALL future windows products. For now I will stick to XP though, as I need it for making music, but as soon as I can use my soundcard (or get a new one for a decent price, that works on linux) I will stop using MS products all over.
Cloud computing is impossible to stop, with the ever increasing speeds of networks it makes this idea more feasable - its all a matter of when its going to happen, not if its going to happen.
That said i agree its pretty dodgy territory handing over all our personal details like that, you can pretty much guarentee marketing companies are standing around rubbing their hands together at the moment salivating over the data thats going to be collected for their exploitation.
For me, there is no way I will fall for the cloud culture, no way, no how.
I’ve had a website with massive storage capacities for years but still I NEVER put up private stuff (read: Home produced porn )
But the Cloud culture is just a tiny bit of the new Windows experience which finally actually make sense in it’s design, functions, user friendliness and compatibility.
My point in all this is that Win7 is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Vista, which to me is very comforting since I almost, you hear me? Aaaalmost, went Mac. So, it’s comforting to me and all other frustrated Vista users or ancient XP holders who want to have a new, fresh and kissable OS. (I really need to date more)
Epedemic: I’m not sure I understand. Are you asking if your computer would be strong enough to run it?
If you have XP installed, Windows 7 will run even faster now and tons more good looking. If you’re running Vista, Windows will be a nice breath of fresh air for you.
So far in Win7 I have run basic surfing and video watching in firefox, Propellerheads Reason, Adobe Premiere CS4, Sony Acid pro 7 and more coming. Everything is running flawless, even if the system is warning about none compatible drivers or software.
Im basically just asking if i can install this directly onto my laptop which uses to run XP/Vista…But it seems like its possible from what your saying…
I have been looking for some information about the the differences between Vista and Windows 7 as far as audio is concerned. However I havent been able to turn up anything just yet, if anyone finds anything hit us up some links here so we can read about
Bento: I can only go by my practical and little experience and say it kicks ass Win7 feels like the natural progression from XP, Vista just feels like that retarded cousin we all have.
Speedwise and judging by performance it resembles a lot to XP, but with more user friendliness and warnings when things are not completely guaranteed by the OS. but like I mentioned, I’ve even run third party drivers like asio 4 all (gotta love them by the way) and it works flawlessly.
Let me know if there is anything specific you want me to try and I’ll see what I can do.
I am really just looking for some technical specs. However if someone could post some DPC latency checker results( http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml ) of windows vista vs windows 7 using the exact same drivers and no software open that would be providing a bit of hard evidence that things are actually better (not that i doubt you guys for a second when you say things are better).
Dvls, Andrew and Epidemic: Yes, yes and yes. If the official release of Win7 is anything near what the Pre beta version is (which all logical thinking says: It should, if not even better) then we are looking at something that at the very least is as fast as XP SP3 if not faster. Again, keep in mind that I have been doing all my testing with full transparency, glass and all that beautiful curvines
I have been beta testing Windows since ME, and I stopped beta testing (officially) since Vista stages. I always got the feeling that the OS was stable, fast and resource friendly, until RC (Release Candidates) where released. Why?
It is very simple, as they go along, they add more crap to the code, and in the end, they overdo it. They add more functionality, more background crap services and badabing, what once looked to be a fast stable little bugger, became a crappy slow little ass bug.
I would not be surprised if the same happens with Windows 7, because remember one thing, the core/kernel is BASED on the Vista one.
The only 3 OS’s that were worth working with so far from Microsoft were XP and Windows NT4. Windows 2000 Professional was THE os, but less people made drivers and software available for that when XP was released.
They should look back in time, and see what they did then, and then make an OS that runs as fine as the above 3.
As for the server versions of Vista (2003/2008) I must say that they are VERY nice, and I have not had ONE CRASH of those on my Servers so far (updtime around 180 days now)
OSX, well, thats the way I want an OS to work, but not LOOK! But hey, you can not have everything!
I have requested Beta codes from MS and will install a VM with it tonight or monday and see what gives!
