looking for a pro to explain this technique…

i was hoping someone would be able to explain the technique in the following video… it looks like all his eqs pretty much stay around 12 o clock, both channels are up, and is using the high pass filter on each channel to control and balance the sound… does anyone use this technique or could explain to me what exactly is going on? really appreciate any input… thanks alot

?@?#$

looks pretty much like he is touching the knobs to look busy …

Yeah…not seeing much happening there!

He is jamming 2 tracks at the same time…and using the HiPass to control the levels and sound combo.

Is he even moving the EQ knobs when touching them???

Yeah, doesn’t look like he’s doing much at all.

It looks like “oh theres a camera, look busy” Its very hard to tell if thats the track he’s playing or if he’s making tiny tweaks!!
Well at least he looks busy…ish!

it is kinda strange, he uses only an x1 and mixes 2 tracks without some action behind it(no loops, no effects, etc.). so he skips the part that involves skills and just haves an easy time behind the mixer.

i guess the camera would have made him uneasy if he just stood there and did what was needed.

as long as the crowd likes what he does…

Very true!!Its easy to sit at home analyse a video!! Every dj will at some point in their career have a video taken that doesnt do him/her justice!
It might be small but at least hes making an effort for the camera! It would be worse if he just stood there!!

A lot of DJ’s will do nervous fidgeting with knobs and faders just to make sure they’re where they’re supposed to be. I think that’s more what he’s doing there and not really trying to fake it.

Ok, ok, ok, ok, ok!

EDIT: But I do hate it when DJs tweak the EQ all the time and just by tiny amounts. Noone is going to hear the difference, anyways.

they could be recording? it could matter to them? perfectionism is a deadly disease.

being on my apc40 since the encoders are like butter I constantly am having to make slight adjustments so that they’re where they need to be so if I drop in some flanger it doesnt get extremely bass heavy and sound like garbage.
Then again thats the only problem I have with using encoders for eq control since you have to be a bit more careful.

Add me to one of those types. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it nervous but, yeah, I regularly run my finger tips over the knobs (teehee). Even more so with a 92 like the one in the vid–I actually mix more with the EQs on a 92 than the faders.

BTW, what about those pegged-out levels?!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Seems overdriven & a bit distorted but you can’t really tell from all the room ambiance. Also I NEVER have 2 channel faders pegged. If you max one then you really should drop it just a bit when you bring in the other otherwise you’re apt to have a huge drop in level & energy when only playing 1 track. There’s no where to go but down from the way he’s mixing.

I’m not going to knock him for just touching the knobs, because it’s obvious he’s really doing nothing more than using the filters. It’s his prerogative on whether he wants to make little adjustments and if that’s what gets him club gigs, more power to him.

Off the record though, I’m not a fan of touching shit to look busy cause it’s pointless but people like seeing a dj mixing so if it works for him, awesome.

once you learn how filters work, you never need to touch the EQs.

Unless you want to boost the mids…

He’s doing 3 things. Two of them are awesome, the third makes me hate him.

First, he’s not ruining perfectly good music with bullshit techniques that add nothing but get you praise on internet forums devoted to mindless effect noodling.

Second, he’s playing with hi-pass filters…less annoyingly than some.

Third, the’s running every channel and the master into the red. Xone meters are labeled wrong, so he might not be clipping…I can’t tell based on the shitty recording…but that is not something to admire. And all his EQs are boosting slightly…which is kinda dumb and pointless. He’s probably ruined his ears and doesn’t know what music sounds like when it’s not clipping.

So, there’s not so much of a technique per se…just a DJ doing what a DJ does and not pandering to the controllerist douchebags that want him to ruin everything just so he can be doing something.

I used to do that on the Behringer and even more so now that I’m on a 42. The line faders are VERY sensitive and I gather it’s pretty close on a 92.
