Loose Tonearm on Technics
Hi guys,
I’m wondering if anyone knows how to fix a loose technics tonearm? It’s a 1210 mk5
The flight case it was in opened during transportation and it dropped out.
I believe the top pivot screw got knocked out of the threads in the tone arm, thus causing the looseness. I might be wrong though.
Here’s a video to better explain it.

Does anyone know how to fix it?
Loosen the outer locking screw, and then tighten the inner screw, and tighten the outer locking screw?
Ouch. From what I have heard it could either be a broken bearing/pivot screw or they have been loosened. There are some places that can fix these issues by replacing parts but some will write the whole tone arm off. In your case since it’s been dropped I would be booking it in for professional service or replacing the tone arm unfortunately.
You are better off replacing the entire tonearm. Replacing the bearing just isn’t worth the effort.
could anyone link me to a pictorial of the mechanism? im having trouble imagining the internal mechanism. isn’t the bearing just the ball?
No, it’s like a cylinder. There are stems inside the cylinder that allow it to move and rotate smoothly.
Hmm, since i have nothing to lose i guess i could try to repair it before I replace the entire tone arm? Granted it wont be the same.
Would I just tighten the inner screw and align it in the bearing hole?
Here’s a thread for you.
Basically, don’t bother attempting it unless you already have another tonearm. It’s just not worth the time.
