MAC Clean-up

MAC Clean-up

Hello DJTT,

Just wondering for all the mac users… what do you do to free up some harddrive space?

I have a smart folder on my desktop that collects all files over 1gb. I’ll check it periodically and clear out stuff I’ve burned to disc, but forgot to delete. I keep meaning to make smaller incremental folders, 500 mb, 250 mb etc…

I’m probably going to start doing that & When deleting an application you just put it in the trash bin and its gone right?? Cause that’s how I’ve been doing it

Onyx is what I use.

you gotta empty the trash for it to be wiped from the hard drive (and get more space), go to Finder->Empty Trash

i use Disk Inventory X to see what exactly is taking up space on my disk:

I have a question sort of along the same lines, when I have installed demo version of vst’s and the likes and then removed them they still show up in Ableton, is there a way to remove them?

Onyx

Works really well.

or Mac Tuneup.

Same here except jam packs I downloaded for logic pro

look for something along the lines of “rescanning” i’d think. don’t know for sure.

yes & no…

when you move the application to the trash and delete it the application is gone, but there may be some files that were part of that program lingering around that you don’t need. Technically your mac deletes these files for you overnight, but if your mac is off overnight when these scripts are supposed to run then they obviously won’t run. So using a program like Onyx or similar type of program will ensure the removal of these files…

Also here is a really good article on whether or not you should be shutting down your computer every night… "Sleep" or "Shut Down"? | Mac-Forums | Fix Mac iPhone iPad | Buying Tips | iOS OS Help

Onyx has served me well for a long time. I wont use anything else.

You can set your Mac to run the clean up scripts at times when its in use though but i like to know its done by using Onyx. You can also run these ‘overnighjt scripts’ manually.

Theres also a lot of evidence that leaving a Macbook (polycarb) on can cause the front of the case to split. Evidence enough when my friends simply split over night once. She had read the old thing about Mac and unix and being designed to be left on.

YOITS!

So THATS what happened to my MacBook black.

Cheers for that…some CLOSURE!

Yes…the story about leaving your machine on:

a Television would last forever if you never turned it off.
Why? Turning it on and off makes it hot…then cold. This wears out the components over time.

Now lots of folks said they same about computers.

Whether its true…is now a grey area.

If there is a factory fault (like the mac splitting from being on all the time) then the above is not applicable.

Why do the polycarbs split? Is battery swell? Or just heat (polycarb is not a great engineering plastic, just as shite as acrylic)?

Phil.

Ill try out onxy tonight. I was using mainmenu and it works pretty good.

i use onxy and mac janitor..

Mac Janitor is excellent. I used it on my old MBP but i didnt think it worked on Snow Leopard . Will check it out.

the 1.3 works with sno leo.. at least with my mac :stuck_out_tongue:

Remove about 2GB of language support you will never need.

Hey Guys, my girl’s got the white macbook recently, but what’s this I hear about leaving it on, is that in hibernation mode or something?
(And is it also applicable for the current generation MacBooks?
