Mac Vs Windows Am I making a Mistake???

Mac Vs Windows Am I making a Mistake???

Hi Everyone,

I currently use a Dell core 2 duo 1.66GHz, 3 gig memory and 17" Crystalview lcd as my DJ laptop.

Tomorrow I must pickup the Macbook A1181 with some upgrades to it.
2 Gig CPU, 2 gig Memory, 160 gig HDD 13.1" LCD.

AM I DOING THE RIGHT THING???
This is a second hand Macbook in very good condition.

My setup is BCD3000 and traktor Pro 1.23

the 13.1" LCD worries me big time.
PLease let me know what you guys think before I buy this.

Thank you
DJ Stone (SA)

I have been using a Macbook Pro 13" unibody for about 5 months now and I have no issues at all with the screen size. I like its compactness.

i think it makes more sense to upgrade ur controller/soundcard first, that laptop is plently powerful, just awkward with that big screen

Thanks guys,
I feel better.
Charo, I just bought the damn bcd3000 end december2009. Only got it in January.
I would love to go to the VCI100 or something but finances are tight.
I thought doing the laptop 1st as it is available.

I’ll place an ad out for the bcd3000 this week.

What do you recommend I get as controller?

Thanks guys

I did exactly the same switch. I had to borrow a friends Dell (same model as yours) as my old PC piece of crap died on me. the Dell did the job fine don’t get me wrong, but the Mac definitely is a lot smoother. My mate had all kinds of problems with his Dell due to the internet settings giving him drop outs and stuff, so every time he uses Traktor he has to turn it off, long!! My mac never has that problem. I always turn the internet off at gigs (a lot easier to do than with a PC), but at home I can have the internet open, itunes, traktor, hell what ever I want, and never get drop outs.
Also I got nothing against PCs but I just hate windows, OSX in my opinion is by far a superior operating system.

Thanks guys,
Dodge, I think you just had the final say in this.
I’m getting it today.
It’s second hand but in good nic.
Price in my money is R5000.00, I think thats about 650US.
They are very expensive this side.

ONLY WORRY I HAVE THOUGH???
Getting used to the new MAC OS Drivers and getting it setup with all my stuff.
Only Worry!

Thanks guys

Defo the right move. Once you go Mac you will not look back. That machine spec you are getting is plenty good enough

Depending on how cheap you’re getting it, i’d consider trying to get a new Macbook Pro for a few extra 100s but I understand if budget is an issue.

Those Macbook A1181 will still piss on a Dell for stability etc

Its a breeze.

Had mine for about 2 months now…

Got my Macbook 13" black 2.4, 4gig crucial ram. Mint condidtion used for £550! Touch!

Don’t worry all your shit will work fine. plus you got the added bonus of discovering all the new nifty things you can do with OSX… 2 finger scrolling, stacks, genie effect on your dock, screen zooming… I need to go jack off while playing with photo booth now.

i guess i’m not surprised everyone is going gaga for apple when to me at least the weakest link in the chain here is the bcd, and thus should be replaced first.

invest the money in new controller/soundcard and if anything, create a new partition with a striped windows OS optimized for running audio, and i bet it will almost feel like you got a new computer as well.

You don’t need drivers like how you do on a windoze machine. basically, you jus plug and play with nearly all hardware. somethings require separate software, but most things will plugin and just work… you will see how simple it all is, soon enough! :sunglasses:

no

sorry, had to

Macs are pretty people-proof, so it’s not a bad choice.

Mac’s are the way to go:wink:. Picking one up as soon as i get the money for it.

Do yourself a favour though, get rid of that BCD3000, i used one for 2 years and it pissed me the hell off 9 out of 10 times because it was so glitchy.

Switched to VCI, never had any problems. Best choice ever.

Good luck with you new mac.

Hi Charo,
Did the stripped OS with nothing but my DJ software Traktor and my music.
Still had it running not so smooth after say the 3rd hour.
Had another laptop on to play premixes that i do for gigs when i need to take a break.
That saved me many a time to restart the dell.
Everyone’s crazy about mac and stabillity. I thought that this would be a good move for now.

This BCD3000 is driving me nuts so i need to plan the next move with that.
Was thinking about the X1 but the suppliers here in SA don’t stock them.
Can’t see and demo it.
As far as backup is concerned here in SA, there is none.
The average guy using a controller is stuck on his TSI file from NI.
I would on the other hand like to customize my stuff to fit the feel i want.

It’s like i entered into a new world and there is no one there apart from all you nice people miles away.

Thanks for all the advice and help
I do appreciate it very much.

Cheers

Once you get the mac, you can obviously flog the BCD and the Dell to a new starter so that will free up some funds for more gear. If you want to keep it cheap though, maybe go for what I got; Novation Launchpad (chicks loves the LEDs, plus you got shit loads of buttons), and something like a nanokontrol or the LPD8 for the rotary dials and line faders. I use an external mixer so something like VCI isn’t a big deal to me. If you want to go purely midi then yeah, you’ll want something with better mixing capabilities than the nanokontrol, I use it purely for the FX as obviously the external mixer has the X fader, line faders & EQ.

at first i was going to rant> dont get mac, buy new gear instead and then mac… but then i realized:

Man, this is like thread number #BRAZZILLION that complains about compatibility and stability of a DELL pc with DAW software… srlsy whats up with those machines? are they projected, manufactured and serviced by brain damaged chimps, or what???

People I am In LoVe.
Why did i not change to Mac long time ago.
Been on this baby now for a day.
Still learning but awesome.
Thanks guys for helping me make this decision.

without knowing what you did to stripe and optimize, it’s hard to concede that all dell or windows pc can’t be made stable. I would also suggest that the bcd3000 drivers could be playing a role in the problems you were having.

(we) told you so!
you got into 2 finger scrolling yet? that to me is probably the single best feature about mac laptops. No more moving the mouse to the scroll bar and dragging. I love it
