2 questions, firstly, looking at getting a macbook for both uni next september and for dj-ing with; would the standard 13" 2.4 macbook with the 4gb ram upgrade be up to the task?
and secondly, currently comparing the apple to jigsaw24.com, and was wondering whether it is worth saving the hundred quid or so or dealing direct with apple? any experience would be appreciated!
tiny screen?..its not that small, 10" netbooks are small. I have a mb, love it and wouldnt dj with anything bigger, why? I believe that a smaller screen keeps you focused on the crowd, and not on the eye candy.
just remember that the new macbooks come without a firewire port. so one less port (without a hub aka additional latency) and also the ideal port to hook up an external drive.
hey dont get me wrong, i like the tiny screen (im not compensationg for anything here ). but it is tiny. 10" is microscopic. 15" is norm, 17" is big and anything bigger is unneccessarily awesome! this is kaons unofficial guide to getting square eyes
From what i can see jigsaw24.com are knocking off some of the VAT to get the price under what you would pay at an Apple shop.
A not very know FACT is that no Apple reseller is allowed to sell their products cheaper than what Apple sell them for. Of course you can get a little off if the seller is prepared to pay the VAT themselves.
In my experience (considering that my girlfriend used to work at an Apple Approved Shop) if you buy Apple, buy it from Apple.
I work for an authorised service provider / reseller, we can only sell at apple store prices but there are re-sellers who are classed as “Premium” re-sellers who can sell cheaper
You can get your local reseller to upgrade the HD when needed.
Ive done this 3 times on 2 different Macs. Its pretty cheap, about £30 for the service to clone your existing HD.
Depending on the model of Mac, installing a new HD yourself is not considered a User installable part (like memory) and voids your Apple Care so id check first.
Oh and … dont fret about 7200 . 5400 will do no matter what you do.
Yes the purist will tell you everytime that 7200 is essential and im sure theres a few reading this think “this guy is wrong” . Dont listen to the speed nerds (well not all of the time) i know plenty of Pro DJs (professional not Traktor Pro) that do just fine with 5400.
If your concerned, Western Digital do a 320gig 10000rpm internal HD.
Remove the back cover on the battery
Remove the battery
You’ll see the Hard Drive by now
There is a small screw holding the hard drive in on a plastic strip
Remove the screw
Hard drive should just come out after removing the connector
Older Macbooks
Remove battery
There is an access panel with 3 screws, undo the screws
Screws will not come out of the access panel
Remove the access panel
You will see a white tab, this is connected to the Hard drive
Pull the tab outwards this will remove the hard drive
There are 4 screws in the side of the hard drive that hold the little casing on to the drive
Remove that and transfer it to the new drive
Bloody Logic Boards in my experience. Ive had 2 go on me. One on a MBP and one on an iBook.
Costly to replace as well. £800 for my Macbook Pro. I need FireWire so i thought it best to get it done rather than get a new Macbook.
Still rather have the expense than a lifetime of messing and tweaking a pc laptop.
