Mackies or Yamahas? Would really appreciate your inputs.
Ok so I’m sick and done with my KRK Rokit 5’s. The low frequency boost and weak mids are driving me up the wall. Plus there no help when I’m trying more bass driven tracks, they just fall very short. As well I’m moving out of my apartment and into a nice small house with a bigger and much more even shaped bedroom to set up my gear in. So today before I move anything in I’m going to treat the room (or my best attempt to) for the acoustics. I have monitor stands that the new one’s are going to sit on so I’m hoping all of this give me a better (flatter) sound that I want. So I want to produce more bass heavy tunes and I caught between the HS5’s or the MR5’s (my room is still small in a sense) and don’t need anything bigger then that plus I’m on a budget. So yeah what do you guys think? Sorry for the rambling but I feel these are all factors that come in to play. Other monitor recommendations would be cool to.
I don’t think that’s worth it. I have the KRK 5ers too and would I start out again I’d say I should get Yamahas or whatnot, but now that I have them spending the same amout on an only sightly better pair of speakers? Not worth it. Get some decent headphones - those are much cheaper than monitors - and use them as a reference in the final mix. Also if you are used to the KRKs you’re probably already better off with them compared to what you will be able to hear when starting with some low budget speakers of another brand.
Additionally: Don’t treat your room before you move your stuff in. That’s pointless. The acoustics of an empty room and a filled room are light years apart. So if you make an effort now and than put a ton of stuff in the effect is lost. Also don’t just put foam on there and call your room “treated”. It’s not wizzardry, but it’s still a profession. Again: Not worth it if you don’t have at least $1000 to spend: $500 for someone to measure and build and $500 for the stuff.
Others have worked with KRK Rokits till they landed their first hit, you can do it too. It’s not about equipment anymore today.
Thanks, I’m not entirely sure on the whole process of how to treat a room, I just read into it when I was reading about monitor placement. So I guess I’ll just measure for the placement then. Yeah headphones are something I plan on getting as well. I appreciate your input but I’ve made up my mind for a while now to get different monitors and sell the KRK’s. It’s worth it to me. I gave the KRK’s a fair use and just not really liking them. So I would like to try something else out and see how that goes.
As I mentioned in the other thread, download Room EQ Wizard, get yourself a cheap SPL meter or mic and do tests. Once you’ve done some tests, get real treatment, particularly for your corners if you’re into heavy bass stuff.
And after that, upgrade your monitors, and I’d say look into Focal Alphas as well. They’ll be a bit more, but they’re fantastic speakers.
Of the two I would go with the Mackies, though it’s not a huge leap from what you have so not sure how big a difference it will be. Hopefully with the new space and some acoustic treatment, it’ll be a nice treat!
I was listening to different monitors today in GC and the low end difference between the Rokit 5’s and the MR 5’s was pretty drastic. Yeah it’s not a huge leap from KRK’s to Mackie’s but I think I’m moving in the right direction.
Mackie for a lifetime of durability. Yamaha for a cleaner monitor set up. I do not recommend mackies if you place the monitors more than 3 feet away from you. The frequency fluctuation on Mackies tends to seperate at the 2.5 foot mark. I did not see frequency fluctuation in my old yamahas until being about 7 feet away.
