MBA or MBP?

MBA or MBP?

Hey guys, I’ve got a situation here…

Macbook Air (late 2010): 11" 2gb ram (max 4gb), 1,4gHz, 64GB= 849 euro
Macbook Pro (late 2010): 13.3" 4gb ram (max 8gb), 2,66gHz, 320GB= 1199,95

Which should I get? The MBP specs are very good but the price’s much higher…
I’m only going to use it for Dj purposes, running programs like Ableton Live, Traktor Scratch Pro 2 and maybe Cubase, SSL etc.
Will the MBA be good enough? The price fits my budget alot better…

11" screen seems damn small

Either will have enough grunt to cope with Traktor …

This

I would go for the MBP for the power.

I have used a 1.6GHz netbook and it worked fine, as long I didnt go crazy with the FXs. The small screen didnt bother me, but I did wish Traktor had more options for moving or resizing the interface…

I like going crazy with FX and samples :open_mouth:. That means a MBP would be a better choice because of the 2,66gHz?

This MBA with a 4GB ram update, will it be fast? I use TSP2 with 2 track decks, and 2 sample decks, I use 2/4 FX modules and I’m thinking about buying an A10 for 4 deck timecode…

Air if you want traktor to open really fast..
and Pro if you want anything else out of your computer

If you’re worried about price why dont u get a powerful pc? I got mine in my description for around $800 US. Unless you really want a mac. Then I would go MBP. If you’re gonna do it you might as well spend the extra couple hundred and get something you know can handle everything you will put it through. It’s not hard to strain a 1.4 ghz processor.

The biggest downside I see with the MBA is that lonely USB port. You better get a damn good hub, probably will require external power, if you plan on connecting several controllers/soundcards

11" is small and 64 GB is a lot less than 320. Plus, it’s not like MBPs are THAT big to tote around. I would spend the extra money.

MBA or MBP?

Are you looking in the apple store, or elsewhere?

I was comparing the two today as well and priced out a 2.7ghz, 13.3", 500gb, and 8gb ram MBP for $1699.

The solid state drive in the MBA is what I wanted…but putting it in the MBP really drove up the price tho. The MBA just didn’t compete with the MBP. I can live with the normal drive and a little extra weight.

^^ drop the cd drive, and pop a ssd in the boot drive and a bigger hd in the space where the cd drive was.

best investment ive ever made

Recertified MBP 13 inch. I prefer that some guy already returned the computer and it was repaired by US technicians rather than a sealed box from China… Also cheaper.

Oh shit I heard that first on these forums!!!

Poppin in to ask quick…Would the current baseline 13" MBP be fine for nothing but a super music machine? Traktor, Ableton, and Reason would be the only pieces of software I would instal on the thing. I can’t imagine I’d run into ANY issues, but sure as hell ain’t gonna hurt to ask!

If money is no object buy a MBP, or a MB if you don’t want to spend so much
I’ve got a MB early 2008 that runs TSP2 perfectly

Money is only an object to about the $1200 range. I can probably muster up the moneys to that point, but anything more is going to be pushing it I think, haha. If it’s the best purchase I can make for anything music, then that’s the route I’ll probably go.

w3rd! Bought a Blackbook on 2008 for 600 and put 4GB RAM and the thing run TP2 like a boss. I played with Ableton for a while and maybe opening the application was not instantly like TP2.

One thing Im certain is that for a 2006 computer, 5 years later it’s still running great. The only thing that is kinda falling off is that polycarbon body that once it falls off I’ll get a new MBP aluminum. But I will miss that sexy black Macbook a LOT!!

The decision has been made: Macbook Pro! (Buying it somewhere next week) Thanks alot for the help + tips guys! It’s really appreciated!

Yeah it’s a good laptop, my reason was the same as you, I wanted the black rather than white or aluminum finish.

Hopefully it will last me a good few years to come.

Yeah do it, you will be very happy
