Easter weekend here in Montreal means one thing to a lot of people including me: Bal en Blanc! It’s the biggest rave we have and we get the biggest amount of great DJs in one weekend. This year, there was David Guetta, Calvin Harris (both not my thing but whatever), Armin van Buuren, Markus Shulz, Ferry Corsten, W&W, Nicole Moudaber and Dubfire to only name those guys.
Well I got very lucky and while waiting for Nicole Moudaber’s set to start, she came up to my friends and I and started talking to us (thank God we spotted where the DJ entrance to the booth was!!!). My reaction: I froze and it took me until my boyfriend mentioned me to get out of the astonishment and talk to her. I managed to get two sentences out: “I love what you do” and “You are my greatest inspiration as a starting DJ”.
So my question to you is, have you met your favorite DJ or DJ who inspires you the most and what was your reaction? If you haven’t meet that person yet, who is it and how do you think you would react?
I met BT when I was 14 at a signing, 14 years ago. Fuck, I’m old. I freaked out on the inside. I just said, “dude, you’re the shit.” Most recently, I ran into Amine Edge and Thug D.A.N.C.E. at a pool party. Nice guys. They looked at my girlfriend, got on their knees, and bowed. That was cool.
ive met a few guys, arty, nicky romero, hardwell, chris lake. But the best was meeting Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method. He was the coolest and most genuine dj I’ve ever met, when i started asking him some tech questions, he realized i was a dj, and invited me in the booth after the show, to look at the gear and talk.
Got to chat with Dave the Drummer and Chris Liberator for a little bit back in 2004ish. Not superstars but they are a big part of the sound that really got me into electronic music. Both were pretty easy to talk to despite being fresh off a flight. Made my night.
I don’t really geek out around famous people or musicians. The exception to that being the first time I met Danny Carey from Tool. All I could manage to really get out was “man…derrr thank you, you have no idea…just thank you” He appeared amused. I shook his hand and went to turn around and he reminded me that I had brought a CD to get signed. hah.
Opened for Chali 2na from Jurassic 5. Easily one of my all time favorite rappers. He’s a super super nice guy, and it was an honor to back up his crew with some scratching that night.
I’m really into breaks/nuskoolbreaks, and also had the pleasure of playing with Deekline and the Stanton Warriors. After-partied with those guys, again really nice people.
Went to Breakspoll in London last year and met all kinds of heads from that scene/genre. Everyone here seems to eat up house music…so no point in name dropping
I’ve had the chance to meet dj craze, porter robinson, cosmic gate, dvbbs and a fair amount of others. i always come off as a complete fruit cake, they were all really nice though
My best friend booked the Plumps a few weeks ago. We talked for years and years about doing that. I couldnt spare the time off work to make the trip up to Canada for it. He calls me the afternoon following the show laughing at me saying Lee came back for the afterparty and they just talked bullshit for a few hours.
Coincidentally, the same thing is happening with Elite Force in a couple weeks. I’m missing everything.
i met a few well known djs and i treat them like every other person that i meet for the first time. i don´t really get that “excited” like a 5 years old
I had to go recordshopping and had dinner with some of my favorite dj’s (Todd Terje, Prins Thomas, Idjut Boys, Rebolledo, Strangefruit (from Mungolian Jetset)). It was fun! It was in the beginning kind of weird for me, because i didn’t know what to say. But after a few minutes it sorted itself out, we just started talking about music and then we kept on talking about other things in life . And i met a lot of other national and international artists as well. On festivals, parties, concerts,… in the backstage.
I’m very glad i had the opportunity to meet other dj’s/producers. But it’s easier to meet people when you’re a promotor yourself. And I just talk with them like i talk with other people.
A friend and i unwittingly made the upstairs section of Amnesia in Ibiza last year to see Kill the Noise/Nero/Feed Me/Chase and Status.
There were a lot of fairly reserved people up there (not looking like they came for the sweat box that is amnesia!) so that indicated we shouldn’t of been there in the first place, but we though whatever, keep shtum and enjoy the aircon and the awesome view!
Anyway, Nero finished their set and Chase and Status started up. We turned around and both of the blokes from Nero were there, with the lass who does the Vocals. Proper sound set of Fellas. Had a couple of beers with them and got back to jumping about.
Not dj-related, but the most genuine “famous” guy i ever met was Aaron Bruno of Awolnation. I showed up at a gig that was sold out months before with no tickets, people outside were actually searching for tickets, not selling them
Anyways i got desperate and in the need of a toilet , so i went to the nearest restaurant i could find. Sat down, ate something, and overheard an english-speaking dude trying to explain to a chinese waiter what he wanted. Turned around to see aaron himself. He invited me over to his table, we had dinner together and chatted about music, exchanged emails and stuff.
I paid dinner, he put me on the VIP list, so that was pretty much one of the happiest days of my life
Of my favorite i have had the luck of meeting a few of them (Richie Hawtin, Magda, Steve Lawler, Satoshi Tomie) and recently got drunk with Guti and Tini these last two are reaaaly cool to hang out!!! Richie was a little weird but i was to young and annoying he still is my number 1!!!
