Meters question
It seems like every video I watch the meters on the mixer are well into the red.. here’s an example of one I watched this morning
If you’re not interested, meters can be seen clearly for a good bit at 4.27
Is this just the djm-800? Them shits is solid in the red and I don’t understand.. I’ve been under the impression that for the clearest signal to the speakers that you want to keep it ideally in the green?

Well.. it doesn’t really seem to be making a difference, so why not push it that loud if it’s not going to fuck up..
they’re not in the red. THEY ARE COMPLETELY MAXED OUT!

Any body here on the forum wanna try the same thing with their own djm-800. what are the results?

You can hear its distorted. To be honest if its in a club and theres a compressor then it wont matter. I bet millions of DJs play in the red like that with CDJ.
The mixer can handle it so they think fuck it, lets smash it.
Hugely different if its a digital setup. If you drive your software into the red you will clip your soundcard and it will be very messy.
Never have your DJ software in the red. Its bad bad bad.

It’s funny, I come across this ALL the time. It always seems I have to “reset” the gain staging when following some DJ’s. I have to gradually turn down the input gain on their track while turning up the amp to keep the SPL the same. I never understood the louder is better adage.
Hmm I wasn’t really referring to the sound because of it being recorded on a hand held camera.. I mean like every video I see from like festivals etc it’s always in the red.
I can’t say I believe pro dj’s like this that travel the world are playing distorted every single time..
I suppose you answered my question with the compressor comment.. I guess they just max out the mixer because it doesn’t matter how high they push it.. Un-doubtedly the manager is sitting in the back cranking down the sub simultaneously as the dj’s cranking up the gain ha
Good tip on the software too.. I use a djm400 and if i’m even touching the red it’s noticeable..

Remember pioneer mixers have attenuators in them so a red on the meter MIGHT not mean a hot signal.
Apparently the 800 has a built-in adjustable limiter, and it would seem it doesn’t distort as much as previous models. That is not an excuse though!
Yeah i must admit i found it hard to make the 800 distort. Its a good mixer.
The 600 is a different story, the 600 distorts if you just look at it. Terrible.
I often hit the red many times throughout the night depending on the sound situation. The audiofire 2 has really hot outputs! I often have to bring my main down little from its more desirable level.
Hence the name 
Rockstars play at 11. Duh.
And the poor, very nervous and highly annoyed guy in charge of the venue’s sound system is turning the rockstar down at the amplifier while he’s continuing to crank his gains due to his sound pressure threshold shifting.

Don’t copy this, it is a terrible example to follow. I’ve played with residents who, also wanting to be rockstars, started pushing into the red JUST because they saw a few touring DJs come through and do this on our venue’s system.
When asked WTF they thought they were doing one word-for-word literal response I got was “Dude, when D******r Drugs played the guy was like, maxing out the red bars!”
