MF3D Performance mapping - Beat/Cue Juggling/Slicing/Pitching, Remix Deck Ctrl + Fx
Wanted to share a performance mapping I made for the MF3D here and get people’s thoughts.
Watch the videos to get an idea of what it does - but in short, it’s focused on cue juggling, beat slicing, and harmonized tone play layered with different effect chains. There’s also full remix deck control for deck D. The goal was to direct your focus and attention on playing cue points and beat juggling, so you’ll notice the effects in the mapping are generally self limiting and modulate themselves.
Second video discusses the remix deck mode of the mapping along with a “Slice to remix deck” feature which rdej47 cleverly came up.
Backup all your mappings before proceeding.
Import using the BIG import button - make sure to do it twice so the effects cross over.
Some of the functions in this mapping require midi pipe (free, OSX only) : MidiPipe
MF3D settings and Midi Pipe template is included.
Set the MF3D rafiq and MF3D rafiq remix parts of the mapping to input/outut from your midi fighter 3D
Set the MF3D rafiq Pipe.tsi to input/output from Midipipe Output/Input 1
The different modes of the mapping are selected with the top bank buttons. The last 3 pages have alternate modes as well.
Deck focus (for the last three pages) is indicated by the flashing LED on the bottom row - laid out as CABD. Pushing the bank button of the bank you’re already in will toggle deck focus.
First Page: Basic cue points on decks A and B -
LEDs indicate cue point type
Holding the first bank button and pushing the arcade buttons will let you beatjump ±4, 8, 16, or 32 beats on each deck
Side Buttons - Left for Deck A and right for Deck B
Top - Toggle Flux Mode
Middle - Toggle Play/Pause
Bottom - Instant echo out
Second Page: Cue juggling layered with effects.
Default Mode:
Note: You can change which cue points are recalled in the mapping to suit your workflow and how you have your songs set up.
For the purposes of this mapping I prep my cues as such
1 - Intro
5 - Second break,
6/7 - 1st/2nd chorus.
2, 3, and 4 - Wildcards for cue juggling, drumming, messing around.
The top row plays cue points 1, 5, 6, and 7 dry.
Bottom 3 rows play cue points 2, 3, and 4. Column 4 plays them dry. Columns 1-3 play them layered with effects.
Alternate Mode - Effects are applied without cue point recall.
Side Buttons:
Top left - Alternate mode
Middle and bottom left - Alternate effect layers
Top right - Toggle Flux mode
Middle Right - Toggle Play/Pause
Third Page - Beatslicing and harmonized pitching
Default Mode:
Lay a cue point with the bottom left side button. The two columns on the right then slice track into 8 beats from that cue point.
Left two colums for effects - Bottom left arcade button toggles quantize on and off
Alternate Mode:
Lay a cue point with the bottom left side button. Layout is split diagonally into two triangles. Pressing a button will jump to the temp cue you set, activate a 1 beat loop and pitch that beat up or down according to a harmonic minor scale. This works great for more atonal tracks that don’t already have too much melody going on.
The buttons along the middle splitting up the two triangles work as such
Bottom left yellow - Quantize on/off
Second column orange - Activate effect and simultaneously reset pitch - Allows you to transition back to normal pitch with an effect layered on top.
Column 3 Purple - Pitch up one octave
Top right blue - Default pitch
If you hold down the bottom left arcade button and press the effects button the top right button will flash. This is another alternate mode which allows you to pitch the track on the fly using the same buttons without jumping to a temp cue or setting a loop. This lets you pitch harmonically on the fly while the track plays normally as it would. (forgot to talk about this in the video)
Side Buttons:
Top right - Alternate Mode
Middle and Bottom left - Alternate effect layers
Top right - Toggle between harmonic minor and major scales for beat pitching
Middle right - Play/Pause
Bottom right - Lay temp cue point - Pitch buttons will jump to this point or the most recent cue point in the track.
Fourth Page - Beatjuggling with effects and Remix deck control
Default Mode:
Lay a cue point with the bottom left side button.
The top row of buttons will jump to that temp cue. Rows 2, 3, and 4 will jump +1, +2, and +4 beats from that cue point. This lets you do more basic slicing of the song
Columns 1-3 let you apply effects to those slices (identical to page 2). Column plays those slices dry.
Alternate Mode:
Remix deck D + Slice to Remix Deck mode - includes access to:
Volume
Filter
Keylock, Monitor, FX, Punch
Play mode (Loop vs. One Shot), Trigger type (Latched vs. Gated)
Mute
Load, unload
Capture and capture source
Quantize toggle and amount
Also very special thanks to rdej47 for coming up with this clever idea over here on this thread : Concept: Slice to Remix Deck
Instantly slice 16 beats from either deck A or deck B and play them MPC style
Watch second video for full explanation of how this is integrated into the mapping.
Sorry for the length, tried to make this as concise as possible.
Hope you guys find it useful, still a work in progress. Comments, feedback, and suggestions are appreciated ![]()
