When I shop for new gear I usually think.. if I’m serious about something I don’t want to get something I’m going to replace with something better further on down the line..
So I try and get a big picture vision of where I’m going, where I plan on going.. work out what the stepping stones are.. really research stuff.. etc.. so..
If I were to go try and get turn tables I’d probably go top of the line.. but, if I don’t have 2-3K to spend on decks.. and I don’t have any kinda ultra groovy controller, maybe I get the ultra groovy controller.. because I have this vision of what kind of a set up I ultimately want to have.. and it includes both and the ultra groovy controller is “good enough” in the short term.
But.. there are different ways of thinking about it.. but that’s my “go pro” mentality
i generally window shop and drool… if i forget about it, good. it if comes back to haunt me then i know i am serious and i search garage sales and usedottawa before hitting the local music shop
well, I do the window shop and drool thing to.. well it’s usually reviews, forum posts, and whatever first…
What I find is that I’ll become possessed by the desire for some thing.. but.. before I pull the trigger I try and.. detach from the lust a bit and..
Well ok, here’s an example. There’s this EQ I want… the EQ costs $5000. I don’t know that I actually need that EQ, or that buying that EQ would be a smart choice in anyway.. I mean I know it’s a pretty bad ass EQ and all.. but I haven’t really interrogated the idea.. so.. I hold onto the idea that if I’m going to buy a hardware EQ, that’s the one.. and whenever I get around to going “yeah, time to get a hardware EQ” then I’ll start asking all the questions.
I’m kinda always researching alllll kinds of stuff… and there’s all kinds of stuff I want.. the trick is to.. not just buy a lot of stuff on lust.. but to be smart about where I spend money because, sadly.. I’m not filthy rich
