Monitor Speaker set up for computer production on PC
Noob question here, i’ve just started to get into computer music production, and i’m looking for a recomendation on low-mid range monitors and whatever else is need to hook them up to my desktop pc. Thanks
haha oh. “low-mid range monitors” should have tipped me. thought you meant price. if anybody needs any info on low-mid range priced video monitors, let me know . . .
I actually do mean price, but what i am getting at is as follows, i have a set of active Alessis monitors i use for djing hooked up to my mixer. How do i use these with my pc for use with Ableton reason etc. I am also looking for a recomendation on speakers as my desktop and dj set up are in different locations.
I had some Alesis M1 620’s for a couple years, but they recently shat themselves after a power outage…and they were on a damn good surge protector too. They were decent, but that particular model was notorious for having issues with hissing, so I wouldn’t recommend them. I plan on replacing them with a set of KRK RP6’s in a week or so. Most peeps that have them seem to like em, and at $199 a pop, the price is certainly right.
yeah thats the ones my mate told me to get. Whats the best way to hook these up to a desktop set up, for use with reason and ableton etc. Got the Audio 8 dj, would i need a different soundcard?
no mate that’s fine, I have mine going through an external mixer (DJM-800) but you can do it as you like.
If you want to go straight from the audio 8 to the KRKs they have RCA inputs, or if you have a mixer with balanced outs you can use the XLR or TRS inputs. Something to bear in mind with studio style monitors is that they generally don’t have a central volume control like most computer speakers, they have independent controls on the back of the unit. It’s easier to control the volume either in your software (which I assume is Traktor) or with a mixer between the soundcard and monitors. But you don’t have to, that’s just what I do.
This is what the back of the Rokit 5 looks like for reference.
