More fun programming the VCI-100!

As anyone interested in the VCI-100 SE has noticed, Ean has created a super knob that turns on and turns up as you twist it. I’ve accomplished this so far (thanks to his tutorial on super knobs :stuck_out_tongue:) and I have been getting excellent results so far

Here’s what’s buggin me: he claims to have built a knob that turns on, turns up, and then FREEZES at the full on position (127 midi level). this is simply the FX button #2 kicking in at the full on.

HOW THE HELL DOES HE DO IT??? I’ve been sitting in front of my VCI for the past 3 hours seeing if i can program the knob to turn on ONLY at the full on position. I figured it was a simple invert command… if only it were so easy

I’ve been fooling around with the text code TKS file and have gotten nowhere. Am i going to require a proprietary program like midipipe?

anyone else programmed their VCI to this point? any other cool tricks anyone can share?

Ean can correct me but most likely this can be done with something like bomes. You can set the first 126 steps to trigger one thing and 127 to another.

Or use Midipipe on the mac. Ean’s templates he gave out a while back were very helpful to show how he was triggering different events.

bingo- the secret sauce goes like this:

0-98%- 00000000000
98%-100%- 127

add salt for flavor.

O… K…

now I’m in the right direction. I re-read the tutorial on setting CC values a few hundred times. Midipipe is Mac, what should I use for Windows? then i need to manipulate the CC values (Ean’s secret sauce).

Bomes? Bento, you’re referring to od bomes midi manipulator? (i’ll google it). won’t I need to pay for that?

My next trick I’m working on is assigning 16 knobs on my midi keyboard to different effects. After I figure out how to work the CC values, i hope to be able to have each knob on a different effect, and have effect directly selected as soon as that knob is engaged.

any other tricks anyone has done or heard about?

Plenty, plenty. It just takes waaaaaay longer to write them up than it does to actually make them function.

I have a neat trick I want to share with the X-Session Pro users where holding down the loop key turns incr-decr arrow keys into loop-length setters and the keyup does nothing. If you press the key and don’t touch the loop-length keys it drops a loop on keyup. This way you can maximize the use of your keys in a logical way. It’s a small Bome’s script with only two rules that generates a bunch of different MIDI events that have to be mapped carefully into your TKS. The hack is simple, but explaining how to set up the script involves explaining the whole rigmarole…

So yes. Some of us are trying to share our hacks. It’s just taking a while to get them described.

Hey, what if you put the increase loop end/decrease loop end on your platters (while loop is held down)? its just a thought, but hey, imagine if you could just simply “scroll” the end backwards for a nice drum build.

(on an off note, why can’t i set “low kill” to a VCI button? let me know if anyone else has the same problem… its really buggin me)

Oh! Bento, what If we started our very own discussion group to the forum, based solely on midi hacks and tricks? i mean, it’s a digital DJ forum, why not?

I personally would not do the loop while held down, instead using midi translations tricks to use the jos to bump the loop into its right length might be a better solution - i also thought about having a knob to assign the loop length, i will personally give these all a go to work out which is best.

Route your audio into Ableton for more midi control over equalizers !

There has been alot of discussion from both sides of the fence saying the forums should have less sections and other people saying it should have more. So at the moment i believe we are trying to keep everyone happy by leaving it how it is at the moment - so saying something like this would be nice to have one day. For the moment we can just post our tricks in the General thread

Figured out the low kill… (and It really irritates me) I need it set to one of the three band EQ’s. i cant have it on Xone92… i really like to have that extra flexibility… and I have ACID, not LIVE, which is a total piss-off (ACID isn’t very friendly. great for producing, tho). Gonna see if I can hack a bomes sequence into setting the low knob to off as i hold down a key. meh. more work required.

keep the tricks coming. I’ll post more as i figure more out.

newest trick: set a foot pedal on my keyboard to switch to midi page two, where i have decks C/D set on all my keys and platters.
