mp4 (Apple Lossless format) vs. WAV format

mp4 (Apple Lossless format) vs. WAV format

I’d appreciate your experiences and opinions please -
I have files in my iTunes library that I have imported from CD’s using the Apple Lossless (mp4) format, which supposedly does not compress the file. I have over time replaced (some of) these with downloaded WAV files. I have found -

  • mp4 files sometimes need to be re-analyzed before playing
  • ‘denser’ wave forms in WAV format
  • improved audio quality in WAV format

Are my findings valid?

flac is lossless bruv, not mp4/aac

Yes, you should have used the real Apple lossless codec, not the MP4 (AAC) one.

@ ksandvik - did just that - shows as mp4 in Traktor library.
@ Jes.NZ - can you import CD’s into iTunes using FLAC? (Well done on Bledisloe)

i see aac, aiff, apple lossless, mp3 and wav.. no flacs tho.

No flac support in iTunes.

lossless is well, lossless.

ie there shouldn’t be a difference between the source and the lossless file. Apple lossless shouldn’t be diff from the Flac or Wav.

At least I f@ckin hope so. I gave up on flac in favor of apple lossless because I use itunes which can’t read flac (thanks steve!)
