Music Question!
hi, my name is Tino, and i just got into djing. but, i had a quick question. my old collection consisted of music downloaded from limewire. should i erase it all? i have a subscription with mymp3pool.com and was wondering if i should just use that and songs from itunes? thank you.
If you already have a good collection of tunes, why delete them? just remember if you want to dj with those old tunes try and use the higher quality ones mate.

I have a lot of old tunes that are great but unfortunately aren’t suitable to play out with as the quality is just too low. They are fine to listen to on the pod or whatever but as a general rule i wouldn’t use any track below 192kbs with a few exceptions.
Well how would I check the bitrate?
In iTunes, you can set a column with the bitrate in it, same with traktor. Also, you can check the properties of the file. I actually use a copy of my full itunes collection as my traktor collection, and am slowly deleting the lower quality tunes from that.
So what’s the lowest bitrate I can go for gigs?
I would say for house parties etc 192 is fine. But for gigs try and use 320 if you can mate. Our last show i used about 50/50 192 and 320 with no issues. Just use yer ears

I think if your getting paid to do gigs then you have a responsibility to be putting on quality audio files.
not less den 320, next step is pure wav.
or FLAC - which is a compressed .wav that useless lossless compression. A flac is kind of like a zip, you compress the file but dont actually lose any information, unlike mp3 where you lose information in the file compression process.
so.. WHY ARE WE ALL NOT USING .FLAC?
because the file size is still rather large and traktor doesnt support storing grid data in the file - instead it stores it in its database.
ah, makes sense. still seems like we’re in search of that “perfect” filetype.
yep. 20 mb mp3 @ 320kps + over 200Mb as a FLAC. Unless you have a multi terabyte HD thats not exactly practical. I have used them tho and they sound fantastiche!

Storage space is super cheap these days so its not much of an issue (for me).
Very interesting what Bento said about Traktor not storing grid data for them though. I have no clue what this means however.
wow i just checked the bitrate of my songs in my collection and half of them ran from 56 to 192. should i delete those and try and start off fresh?
wouldn’t go lower than 192.. maybe delete some and try to get the jewels in a higher bitrate.
diskspace isn’t the problem, but I wouldn’t like to carry a harddisk around all the time.
got some flacs, but don’t really use em. quite an issue for me is that most mp3players out there dont support flacs.. there aren’t many stores around that sell much flacs, are there??
ok so should i just delete all the lower bitrate songs and try to find another subscription service to download them?
