EVERYONE THIS IS A WARNING to back up your music x2 because my external 1tb hard drive has just been corrupted and i cant copy, paste, open any of my files…
everyone plz back up yo shit cuz i just lost a shitload of music, porn, videos, collections of stuff
I’m in the IT industry. Sometimes I’ll ask an end user what the most important part of their computer is. Usually they answer something like, “Oh hummm, I don’t know. The RAM? The processor?”
I remember the afternoon before one of my first gigs (frat/sorority party in college) my 1tb powered external hard drive that had all my music started having the click of death soon after I plugged it in and it would start going click click click then become unreadable.
I had heard of the freezer trick where you leave the hard drive in the freezer and it fixes it. Well after doing that it worked for like 10 minutes then would click and die again during the transfer once it started heating up. So my solution was to put the whole thing in a plastic bag and dump it in a bowl of ice then put it all in the freezer and run the power cord and usb cable out to my computer where I was able to successfully able to transfer all my music in time.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is if it is clicking there is still hope.
the hard drive sounds fine, no weird noises, it powers up, windows detects it but i guess as i was dragging files over, it suddenly froze and i had no choice but to shutdown the computer because it was freezing, and i guess that scrwed everything up
Probably won’t help but try mounting it on a different computer and os. I thought I had lost the last 2 years of music purchases and photos but after some messing around with different computers and recovery programs I managed to copy over most of the data. (And then I bought some external hard drives and made backups!)
I’ve been a bit out of the hardware game for a few years, and the snowball’s really beginning to grow with it’s roll (Moore’s law). I used to suggest Seagate (they also own Maxtor). They’ve been the best as far as I know.
Some may suggest LaCie. My personal opinion of LaCie is that they do make a quality product, but you can get the same quality for a much cheaper price.
I’d stay away from Western Digital.
If you’re going to use an external disc, buy 2 of them. Make one the primary and use the other as a backup. Store the backup (in a temprature controled environment) when you’re not backing up to it.
Um if you already purchased the files somewhere, a nice email to the company and they normally (in my experience) will help you in whatever way they are able to(re download)
Then again there is always the old um aaaa cough torrents cough to re-populate the drive…
there are also some really great programs to fix the corruption on the drive. Do a few quick google searches for rescue disc or similar programs
Also, invest in a second one and some online storage, like x drive or similar.
