Need Help analyzing a Synth

Hi forum,

I’ve been working on a DnB track and I’ve been working on Massive for 3 days trying to get the same or similar synth that the Prototypes used for Suffocate.

I can’t seem to find the right combo of Oscilators to get the synth, so I was hoping that some of you could shed some light on the subject.
I am looking for both the pluck/blip synth and the lead synth.
If anybody can really analyze synths, please help out!
Much Appreciated!

I’ve done it in Serum, but that should not mater too much. Also note that the sounds are not pure. I’m 100% sure that there are some layered used to get smooth envolving sounds and to grant that nice transition from the low-passed plug into the full supersaw lead.

The plug: The individual parts are not hard to figure out: It’s a saw-wave. Than you need a steep low pass filter (24db) with a medium cutoff and an envolope on it with a very short attack, no hold and a decay of about 1sec with no sustain. This will give you the “plug” effect, but a very smooth one (since the envelope is on the lowpass filter, not the amp of the osc). Add some reverb and a delay and you got it. Note that you will want to aim for the “full” plug first before killing the topend with another low pass filter for the build up effect that makes the plug transform from a pad-ish plug into a lead-ish plug. You hear the sound you are aiming for only three times at about 0:11-0:13 in the video.

The lead is a fairly standard super/hypersaw. That’s a bunch of layered saw waves (unison and detune are your friends here). Also layering different types of waveforms helps to shape the sound in this case. Just experiement some or start with a similar sounding preset and start from there. Playin octaves also helps a lot in getting richer sounds reaching from the bottom end to the highs.

I hope this helps a bit. Good luck with it and don’t be worried if it won’t sound like you intent from the start. There are quite a few layers to create, not only two!

This helps a lot! Thank you so much, so much insight!

One more quick question, this can be done on Massive? because my version of massive doesn’t have Hyper saw. But I’m guessing that this is also possible on Operator, correct? I’m using Ableton for this project

Hypersaw is a term used for synth sounds with layered saw waves. So what you do is set one (or more) oscialtors to a saw wave and use the unison and detune features to create multiplay voices. Because every saw wave is a bit detuned to the original tune it sounds very full and huge. That’s why this sound is called a hypersaw. Here’s a nice tutorial I found searching for an image to show you where you find unison and detune features (http://www.theproducerschoice.com/blogs/articles/7877469-massive-club-saw-synth-tutorial).

I highly recommend chosing one synth (Massive is a good choice) and learning it insideout. This should improve your speed and workflow a lot and also of course increases room for creativity since you will be able to (or learning how to) program the sound, which is in your head. Since most people start music production since they want to express themselves or letz say their taste of music this is a pretty essential part. If you are interested in learning sound design with synthesizers have a look at this as well: www.syntorial.com - It’s not exactly cheap, but I really liked the free demo a lot and still consider to buy it for myself for christmas

Hi, I’m coming back to you again, umm do you think you could help out with analyzing another synth because the track took more of a traditional DnB turn, something simmilar to the one used by Pretty Lights in Wayfaring stranger, Color of my Soul or Hot Like Dimes. That sort of glitchy sound that he mixes with the ‘yah’ wobble in hot like dimes around 7:23
