Ok, I have a gig tomorrow, and I just got a text not to long ago from the owner of the venue that Im playing at, and the text goes…
“Hi can you bring international music”
A little back ground on the place, its a mediterranean restaurant/bar/hookah lounge. The owners are from Armenia & from Mexico (dont ask). And its going to be a dinner/dance V-Day party.
I a little lost on whats international music…anyone care to give this one a stab?
Go to a hookah bar, maybe one in westwood or Burbank and scope out the tunes. Ive heard the stufff. Its kinda cool actually. A friend of mine is a sick hookah fanatic and always takes me to all these cool hookah bars all over LA. They are always bunking cool tunes. Some of it will be Middle eastern and sound kinda trancey.
Looks like they dont really know what they talking about, so just go with your own genre,
maybe a little mainstream/commercial, and just rock that place
Hey.
This may be a little late but at least it’s something you can check out for next time.
There’s a label called Putumayo World Music that does compilations with a lot of different kinds of music. A lot of it is pretty good and they have release a couple of Chill out compilations. It could be worth checking out.
this is probably too late but try these - there is a mix of traditional and cross over contemporary styles - these should set you on some sort of direction - this is off the top of my head - if you specify a country i might be able to name others
or try Calabash music or type in world music to Last FM

Djalu Gurruwiwi (if you want no nonsense traditional style Yidaki ..”didge” from NE Arnhem Land)
Jeremy Cloake - especially the Resonance cd - excellent mix of world instruments and “organic techno”
i would say find some other “didge” music than looking up Djalu to mix into dance music - i thought that you were just playing tracks of world music and not mixed into dance music
Djalu plays traditional style Yidaki .. Yolngu style, old man style - not very good for mixing into dance music and personally, after spending time with Djalu and Yolngu people i know i would nt want to hear this mixed with dance music -
i guess i have some strong opinions on this due to having a little insight into ancient traditional copyright systems of indigenous people and Yolngu culture - plus … i think the didge thing has been overdone …
if you really want - i think i have some studio recordings of myself playing Yidaki and will send it to you and you are free to chop it up and use it how you want and - it might take me a few weeks as im about to go visit my mum and the lappie will be staying here in cph
it went good, I got some cd’s that had arabic music, which 1/2 of the Armenians were cool with, but the other half were Russian-Armenians so it was some what of a battle. They also had a belly dance and she dance for about 30mins.
The only thing that pissed me off was some guy was talking shit about the music I was playing (spanish music) which 80% of the people were dancing to. One of his friends asked me if I could play a Armenian slow slong, which I did and then I closed the night with american slow songs, later he asked me to play another Armenian hip hop which I had already played earlier, I told him to hold up for a couple of songs. They ended up sending his girlfriend for the cd and they she started talking sh!t to me. They left making a scene, which made them look bad, I really didnt care because everytime I dj their is always atleast 1 hater.
