New cans! <3 aka The Importance of Proper Cue Sound
With the old cans I could barely hear the bass lines so output had a problem of a bit of a muffled sound since they werent mixed as good as I thought. Got got these Red Waves for $60 at Amazon (thanks to some other thread that hinted that sale!) and have been a total upgrade. I have also use them for Ipad music applications and it performs beautifully.
Obviously there are far better options but point is that if you cue with some lacking in the bass department, dont expect perfect bass performance and even worse if you go crazy with fx. I wish I had decent cans when I started DJing.
So what can you techtoolers say about ? What cans you started using? Which are you using now? Did you noted a significant upgrade? I know I did!
Ooooo those red wave’s look nice. I started with a pair of Bose over the ear headphones and now have some HDJ 500’s. They’re really nice headphones, comparable to the red wave’s in price and sound quality.
I started with a cheap $40 pair of Sonys
Then I garduated to a pair of Sony MDR-V500. Those were fantastic tough as nails, until I stepped on them Now I have a pair of Pioneer HDJ-2000s, they’re wonderful, I love em. I couldn’t be happier!
I’ve had cheap sonys, philips, some make from tkmax that weren’t too bad.
Now I either use these white on ear phones by a company called colour that the girlfriend got for like 20 quid and sound really good, had nice isolation and real deep warm sound
Or use my sennheisers that I ended up going for the 205’s due to comfort and best isolation out of the senn range I had available to me at the time
Wouldn’t change them though as a traktor dj headphones aren’t too important if you actually know your songs!
Sorry for such a broad statement, I just mean like with the invention of cue points, load points etc I pretty much know if I press play, and hit cue point 3 for example I know exactly where it will come in in the song, with phase meters, auto gain, level meters, bpm read outs. It has taken the majority of headphone cueing out of the equation for me at least, saying that if I’m playing a song for the first time it’s nice to have them there to find certain bits.
When it goes back to playing cdjs though, then it’s a diff game.
When I was starting off, I was using a pair of Behringer headphones that cost about 30 quid. You could hardly hear the bass at all. Trying to beatmatch was a nightmare.
I got round it using some of the old scouse house cds I had. Each kick beat made use of the infamous donk, so beatmatching with that was a cinch
dude i dig that 100%. I make loads of my own edits anyway but my cans live next to the mixer for most of my set!
..which are Senny HD25 mk II’s by the way - HIGHLY recommended for durability size comfort and of course most importantly sound quality and loudness. (they also don’t render you too much of a twat when you’re prepping on public transport)
Started out with Skull Candy SK-Pro’s, which were actually pretty good - just fell apart over time.
In all honesty, I think everyone has their own use for headphones - and each to their own
I fell in love with senny’s when they had a stall open in a store here in Ireland went in and tried them all out and settled on the 205’s because of feel, Ive had a problem with headphones falling off my head whilst jumping around, these baby’s are tight didnt notice much difference in sound over the 25’s and the 205’s but think I chose the ones that suited my headshape better
Definitely, even if you don’t need to listen to your tracks, wouldn’t it be horribly boring just standing there, mixing but having no music to listen to?
