New residency position need advice please

gentlemen & ladies i am in need of some assistance.. I have landed my first residency with this local club (huge opportunity) and would like some advice. So my spot will take place after a jazz band performs. I haven’t really dabbled into acid jazz too much and was first wondering what reccomendations you all had for going from a live jazz act into a dj set. Any good transitional songs? I was already thinking about horns and pianos with some house music but was wanting some other input. I’m just stoked about this and want it to go down as great as possible. Thanks in advance fam.

Piano’s you say? any remix by avicii.
Apart from that im stuck. Keep it relaxed and build it up ?
What did you play in your sets for you to become resident ?

Imo if you don’t find some good transitions tunes simply play your music… you can play a big tune to surprise the crowd…also keep an eye on reactions

thanks for the quick replies guys.. I mostly play out house/electro music which this venue is geared towards but i figured a good transitional build up from live jazz to four on the floor would be better suited. But dont know any acid jazz style music off hand but i’m still researching on it. I have two weeks until it starts.

If it were me I’d go for some chilled out house after a jazz set, and push the tempo gradually as the night builds into more dubby stuff and into house / electro house

Hell, you might even get some of the Jazz Musicians to Jam while you are playing early on which would make for a really cool uninterrupted transition :sunglasses:

Uggh no …

Look at stuff here: http://www.traxsource.com/soulfulhouse

How about some Mark Farina, Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, maybe even sone RJD2?

This! And maybe some Amon Tobin, Tosca, DJ Scruff, Aphex Twin, DJ Food, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, The Herbaliser…

i’m checking out these artists and will get back with you all. What do you all think about starting with some nu-disco style of music. Also if i was to post a mix of a potential setlist could I please recieve some feedback

A lot of nu-disco is up-tempo, you could find some lower tempo stuff, though.

Are they expecting you to play house music?
You didn’t say what type of music they play there.

I’d be suprised if people out to see a jazz band would want that, but maybe.

Either go trip-hop / funk

Or deep house / soulful

imo

These would be pretty cool.

The more I think about it, the more it’s clear that you just plainly need to read the crowd. If they liked the jazz section you should at least start with something similar and then move on. If it looks like the jazz part was not well-received of some reason or another, use some other kind of music to get the audience excited again.

Juno download might be helpful to look into, look into the dj charts what others are playing in nu jazz soul funk etc.

Here’s my advice:

  1. find out what sort of music your employer is paying you to play. Asking them would work
  2. play that music
  1. Electro Swing?

I got one for you man. Check this one out: Jazzbit - Sing Sing Sing (Radio Edit) [Ultra] | Music & Downloads on Beatport

Seems like just what you need and you can slowly bring the tempo up to speed if you need to.

hey guys i appreciate all the input so far. the club is mainly going to be a mainstream style of music at night (deadmau5, afrojack, tiesto, and pop remixes) that was what they requested once the floor fills but i come on after a jazz group that plays earlier in the night so i felt like some good transitional tunes to get people into the vibe would be better suited. Also i’m going to be playing for 4-5 hours so i didn’t want to drop all my good tunes that early in the night either.

Jazzy drum and bass…

Stroke your beard whilst playing

(that’s right I said beard not anything else)
