No Controller Neccessary…

Great idea if it is responsive enough. You would never have to map a controller again, lol.

Controller preferred.

As long as it’s multitouch.

But if it’s not you couldn’t do superfader effects like you can with a controller.

That image is being projected. How’s that gonna work? I’m calling bullshit.

Is this not the traktor emulator we saw last year?

I’m calling misinformed

in simplified terms, it’s similar to the reactable. you project your image (the traktor GUI) onto a semitranlucent surface. over that surface you have a grid of infrared LEDs which produce a downward reflection when a finger is touching down on the surface. this reflection is picked up by an infrared camera underneath. the software running in the background traces the position of those reflections (referred to as “blobs”) and translates them into input commands.

this may not necessarily be the exact way to achieve what we see in the video, but I believe I’m pretty close.

The reactable isn’t projected, though, and you aren’t dependent on the visuals to make it work.

If it does really work then it’s still not practical. As you reach through the projection you create shadows in which you can’t see all your controls. Try reaching for two eq knobs at once. Plus, you’d require a ceiling mount or truss for the projector along with your table. Still not buying it. Google the EnKompass System and see what comes up.

Touch screens & surface is not for everyone, not for me. I don’t like the idea to look like i’m playing with virtual clits and tits without having the feel & smell

Im still having a hard time with my phone’s touch screen…faders and encoders all day.

^+1

I’m sorry to be a smartass on this, but: yes, it is. the control principle is more complicated because you use tangibles (the pieces you move around) instead of only tracking blobs. we have two similar installations in the lab at the uni.

I never said it was. I think multitouch surfaces have a long way ahead of them until they can be taken seriously for applications like DJing and the reactable is useless on stage because it is easily affected by ambient lighting. all you get is a good show in terms of visuals, but I don’t go to a party to look at nerds moving pieces around (I do at home though).

please explain how you create shadows on a backlit surface? both the beamer and the IR camera are placed below the display plate - so you don’t really reach through the projection at all  it feels just like an ordinary touch screen.

What CTRLD said. Adding, the projector is on ground level.

lol @ DjkeyWee

@ Ctrld Throughout the video you can see the waveform images and other parts of the visuals projected onto the tops of his hands and shadows being cast by his arms. That’s why I’m saying it’s being projected from above, and that’s why I think it’s fake.

Otherwise, you obviously know what you’re talking about.
