skrillex:
Just gonna set it strait. I had 2 laptops and both of my hard drives stolen out of my hotel in Milan Italy last month. On those laptops and drives were all the project files of Skrillex. All gone now. Also I had a new album that is now gone too. I spent a week pulling my hair out but now im just focussing on the future and re making my album.
via his facebook page.
are you joking? you didnt learn to back your shit up already?
but really, that sucks. hard. no joke, i would have cried and or punched through a wall
OK it sucks I agree, but some people will never learn. Make a Whole backup of your shit, leave it at home or in a Bank safe, whatever floats your boat.
Yeah it still sucks, but I have NO sympathy for the devil… euh for him.
Had two externals I assume as backups.. Pretty sure he’d have everything on those. Dude is touring most of the time and clouds aren’t really viable yet to backup to anything else
the first rule of backups is, never keep them all in the same place!
dude deserves it as far as im concerned… and internet speeds are a lot better o/c than they are here levvis - so the cloud would be a viable option for the important stuff like project files.
Its really hard to believe that he wouldn’t have a complete backup of everything somewhere after the shenanigans which led to his cancelled show a few months ago in Wisconsin.
Skrillex really needs to look into Internet backups
carbonite backs up your machine whenever youre connected to the internet. automatically. to a server. ON THE INTERNET (if i hadnt mentioned that already )
So let me get this right. He has two hard drive. Assuming they’re externals and backups.
Why keep a backup with a backup? Makes no sense! I have two externals. One at home that NEVER gets used and one that a duplicate which I use. If the one I use fails/gets stolen, I then use the other one I have at home.
This is a schoolboy error and deserves NO sympathy for being such an eejit!
It’s his own fault. Robbers are scumbags but seeing as anyone can get robbed at any time it’s down to YOURSELF to make sure that when you do, you don’t lose all your shit.
So yeah, on tour? 2 external backups, one in the room in the safe. Cloud as much as you can.
Just been producing? Burn a DVD with the project include, pop it in an pre-printed envelope, get the hotel to post it to your home or a PO box if you’re really minted.
If in fact they were backups it appears he had them in case of crash, not in case of theft. But seriously I’ve got a Time Machine running on both of my computers, but I don’t have off site backups so if I were to get robbed I would be in the same boat. Hope you guys aren’t as harsh on me if that ever happens. That said I think Skrillex really needs to look at his inner circle and maybe get some more beneficial friends.
no you dont, but you should expect the unexpected - especially somewhere like europe where tourists/tourist areas are robbed daily whether it be pickpockets, bell boys, organised crime rackets etc.
and why did he only report it a month after the fact? im calling shenanigans… his label was probably pressuring him into having an album to release and he hadnt done it yet so came up with a convenient story.
either way he should have had more backups (and not in the one location). at least he had planned for redundancy after the last ‘incident’!
at least you have recognised a problem with your own situation before it happens jojo! i dont have any shit backed up off site either, but i dont really have anything that important… if i lost a harddrive it would be inconvenient having to re-download beatport, itunes, etc but it wouldnt be the end of the world. it has happened to me a few times in the past few years (i think 3 HDD’s in 3-4 years)
